Furthermore, in another way, form is like a mass of foam, without any binding. Feeling is like a bubble on water, with a small taste. Perception is like a mirage, unstable. Formations are like a plantain tree, without essence. Consciousness is like an illusion, without self. This should be explained. Among these, according to the first explanation, each example can counteract all four inversions of the five aggregates. According to the second explanation, each example can counteract each aspect of the inversions of the five aggregates. According to the third explanation, each example can only counteract one aspect of inversion for each aggregate. In the Sutra of the Collection of Righteous Dharmas and others, it says that the elements are like poisonous snakes and the sources are like empty villages, contemplating and establishing them separately. Thus, metaphors are also taught for these two. Having extensively shown the characteristics of the aggregates, elements, and sources, in order to generate wisdom in the disciples again, it is intended to show the great divisions of these. Therefore, the question is asked: What are the divisions of the aspects of the aggregates, elements, and sources? There are four divisions here: division into sixty types such as substantially existent, division into three types such as completely imputed, division into four types such as characteristics, and division into six types such as external appearance. The first of these is to be understood in three ways: by briefly stating the summary, by explaining it in detail, and by showing the immeasurable divisions that are similar to it. The first is: if we summarize the meaning and words of the great divisions that are to be explained, how many are there? It should be understood that the objects to be known are from substantially existent and so on, up to conditions and so on. And how is each of these knowable meanings, characteristics, or natures determined by three aspects: how many aspects are there, and why are they needed? Second, there are seven ways to explain these in detail: namely, dividing into four types such as substantially existent, three types such as knowable, six types such as having form, twelve types such as having defilements, one hundred types such as arising, sixteen types such as past, and eleven types such as conditions.

Initially, how should the characteristics of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, which are the objects to be known, be understood? How many elements of things are needed, and why is it necessary to examine their existence as substances? The first two questions are to dispel confusion about characteristics and classifications, and the third is to dispel clinging to the self. This method should be applied to all situations. Among them, the characteristic of substance is that which can become an object of the senses, without relying on sound, and without relying on the appearance of the nature of some other thing in the mind, but the very essence of that thing can independently appear in the consciousness of the senses or the consciousness of the mind, which is called substance here. Because that thing does not depend on other things, but is self-sufficient. Also, that which becomes an object of the mind's senses means that it does not depend on names, and does not cling to the appearance of names, but clings to the essence of things. This also refers to the inexpressible nature of phenomena, which is the object of the wisdom of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas arising from the mind's senses. And, according to the tenets of the schools, substance is that which is apprehended, not relying on other things, but able to become an object of the senses, such as sound not relying on form, and sound arising through the consciousness of sound. Just as with things like vases, they are directly perceived without the mediation of their respective senses, and then analyzed by the consciousness of the mind, thereby giving rise to the cognition of vases, etc., but substance is not like that. Moreover, of these two characteristics, the first is the characteristic of substance existing in the ultimate truth, and the second is independent substance, as explained by Yeshe Shenyen (Jñānamitra). Therefore, the aggregates of feeling, perception, and consciousness, as well as form, non-revealing form, and that which is composed of aggregates, and the aggregate of form that exists only when manifest, and the non-associated formations, and the aggregate of formations other than mentally fabricated existents, these are all substances. Moreover, the elements and sense bases that have become the nature of these things are also substances, therefore, after reflection, all the aggregates, elements, and sense bases are also substances, but not the substance itself. Thus, the substance of
