The need to analyze the definition and number of entities is: When it is known that an entity with such a definition exists as merely aggregates, elements, and sense bases, those who cling to the notion that the self exists as a substance apart from the aggregates, etc., will be abandoned. Therefore, it is necessary to examine and analyze the definition of what exists as a substance. The definition of what exists by imputation is: Any phenomenon that becomes an object of the senses, is expressed as a term of name, depends on clear cognition, and depends on the appearance of the nature of other phenomena in the mind, is what exists by imputation. Because they depend on other substances, they do not have their own independent nature. For example, shapes do not depend on expression because they are not objects of the senses. They only depend on other things, because the cognition of shape does not arise without grasping the color particles. Therefore, whatever exists independently is what exists as a substance; otherwise, what depends on others is what exists by imputation. Entities both depend on expression and on other things, and are encompassed by the aggregate of form. Similarly, they are also encompassed by aggregates, elements, and sense bases, so everything exists by imputation. The need is to abandon the clinging to the notion that the self apart from the aggregates exists only by imputation, because an entity with the definition of existing by imputation is known to be merely aggregates, elements, and sense bases. Regarding the distinction between conventional truth and ultimate truth, some schools, as stated in the Abhidharmakośa: "If broken or by other wisdom, that cognition is removed, like a pot of water, conventional; the rest is truly existent." As stated, like form and feeling, etc., whatever appears in the mind independently without depending on others is what exists ultimately; while like a pot, a river, a chariot, and a city, etc., they do not appear independently in the mind without depending on other assemblies, therefore they only exist conventionally, so they think. Among them, the Vaibhāṣikas consider ultimate truth...

Some Vaibhashikas consider that the Dharmas which Sautrantikas consider to exist only nominally, differ only in the number of entities, but not in definition. Thus, they consider conventional truth and substantial existence, as well as ultimate truth and nominal existence, to be the same. Therefore, the definitions of substantial existence and nominal existence described here are consistent with the definitions of the two truths of the schools. The Logicians consider that whatever can withstand rational analysis is substantially existent and ultimately existent, and the opposite of that is conventionally existent and nominally existent. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Whatever is ultimately capable of performing a function, that is ultimately existent here, the rest is conventionally existent." The Madhyamikas consider that whatever is the object of a child's mind is conventional truth, and whatever is the object of the wisdom of the noble ones is ultimate truth. As it is said in the Madhyamakāvatāra: "All things are seen as false, the grasping of the two aspects of entities turns. Whatever is seen as true is ultimate truth, seeing as false is considered conventional truth." If you want to easily understand this principle, I have written a separate article, please refer to it. Here, whatever is the object upon which attachment and other afflictions increase, that object is called conventional truth, because they obscure the realization of reality. Thus, all the skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus also become objects of attachment and so on, therefore they are conventionally existent. From what, when one knows only the skandhas and other dharmas as the object of increasing afflictions, one abandons the manifest clinging to the cause of increasing afflictions such as attachment. Whatever is the object upon which, by meditating, all afflictions are purified, that object is ultimately existent, because it is the excellent object of the wisdom of the noble ones. Thus, all the skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus in the form of the two selflessnesses, or all of them are summarized into the four noble truths, in the form of the sixteen aspects such as impermanence
