The difference between grasping and what is grasped, the difference between looking outward and looking inward, the difference between afflicted and non-afflicted, the difference between far and near, and the past, etc., should be appropriately combined. Among them, what has arisen is the past and the present. What has not arisen is the future. Grasping is internal. What is grasped is external. Looking outward is the ground of not being in equanimity. Looking inward is the ground of being in equanimity. The rest are easy to understand. Secondly, to show the meaning of "greatness" in the term aggregates (skandha), again, because suffering such as birth arises from form, etc., and increases and expands more and more, they are called aggregates. As it is said in the sutra, "Only this great mass of suffering arises," it is like using the word aggregate in the sense of "greatness." In the world, it is like trees with very lush branches and leaves are called large tree aggregates. Thirdly, to show that aggregates have the meaning of "shoulder," again, because form, etc., bear the burden of all three types of afflictions, they are called "shoulder" (Tibetan: ཀན་དྷ་, IAST: kandha). Just as in the world, whatever part of the body is used to bear a burden is called "shoulder." Secondly, wanting to show the meaning of element (Sanskrit: dhātu), it is said, "What is the meaning of the word 'element'?" In this regard, it is also possible to use the word 'element' to mean the seed of all dharmas, such as 'the element of beginningless time,' just as it refers to the alaya consciousness as the embodiment of all seeds. Also, the word 'element' also transforms into the meaning of holding one's own characteristics, such as the six consciousness elements, because they hold their own characteristics for their respective uses, so they are elements. It also transforms into the meaning of holding the objects of cause and effect, such as the realms of objects and faculties. It is also the meaning of comprehensively holding all aspects of dharma, that is, the eighteen realms mentioned here, because of how the other realms mentioned are appropriately summarized. The meaning of source (Sanskrit: āyatana) is that from the perspective of place and object, various consciousnesses arise and grow.

Because it is the meaning of becoming the place of arising, it is called 'source of arising'. Also, it is the meaning of the seed of all dharmas, and the meaning of gathering and holding all forms of dharmas. This is explained in the commentary. Now, in order to explain the meaning of the example that illustrates the selflessness of the aggregates, let us first cite a sutra. In the sutra it says: 'For example, a person with eyes sees some bubbles constantly appearing. If he examines them properly, he will find that they are empty, loose, false, and without essence. Similarly, when a noble hearer examines the form aggregate properly, he will find that it appears empty and even without essence.' Similarly, using water bubbles to illustrate feeling, etc. The meaning of these is summarized as: form is like a water bubble, etc. The meaning of explaining the sutra is: why is form likened to a water bubble, etc.? Just as water bubbles, etc., when examined properly, are found to be empty, loose, and without essence, so too, when form, etc., are examined properly with wisdom, they appear empty because of the selflessness of beings, appear loose because of decay and afflictions, appear false because the taste to be experienced is very small, and appear without essence because their own nature is unstable and they are separated from the support of permanent things. Thus, each example of water bubbles, etc., shows that all five aggregates are selfless, etc. Therefore, this treatise should be recited as follows: form is like a water bubble, it is selfless, because it is unstable and without essence. Similarly, the remaining aggregates should also be applied in this way, and the four aggregates of feeling, etc., should also be explained in this way. Or, form is like a water bubble, it is impure. Feeling is like a water bubble on water, the taste of happiness is very small. Conception is like a mirage moved by the wind in the sunlight, it is unstable. Formation is like a tree in water, it is without essence. Consciousness is like an illusion, beings are selfless. Apply it in this way, and the remaining four aggregates of feeling, etc., also
