Does obtaining the result also mean obtaining the cessation of non-analytical (non-definitive) cessation? If one obtains non-analytical cessation, does one also obtain analytical cessation? For some phenomena, one obtains analytical cessation, but not non-analytical cessation. For example, when the path of seeing arises, the wrong view that severs the roots of virtue, and the future afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, except for the aggregates, elements, and sources of the evil realms. As long as the path of seeing has not arisen, one cannot make them into a nature of not arising, so one does not obtain non-analytical cessation, because the path of seeing destroys the seeds. There are also cases where one obtains non-analytical cessation but not analytical cessation. When the path of seeing arises based on the path of immediate result (uninterrupted path), one obtains the non-analytical cessation of the future paths of seeing that are based on other meditative grounds, but not the analytical cessation, because they are uncontaminated. Why does one obtain non-analytical cessation? As long as that path based on the path of immediate result has not arisen, the future paths of seeing based on other meditative grounds are still possible to arise for that person. When it arises, those phenomena will never arise again in that continuum, because it is impossible for one person to generate the path of seeing twice. Therefore, they obtain non-analytical cessation at that time. There are also cases where both cessations are obtained. For example, when the peak of the path of application and forbearance arise, one obtains the non-analytical cessation of the wrong view that severs the roots of virtue, and the aggregates, elements, and sources of the evil realms, in that order. When the path of seeing arises, one obtains analytical cessation because the seeds of both are destroyed. When the wisdom of the peak arises, even if the seed of the wrong view that severs the roots of virtue has not been abandoned, it becomes a nature of never arising in that continuum, so one obtains non-analytical cessation. The same principle should also be applied to the case of obtaining the non-analytical cessation of the aggregates of the evil realms when forbearance arises. There are also cases where neither cessation is obtained, namely, past and present phenomena, and uncontaminated future phenomena that are subject to arising. The Vaibhashikas consider

Both of these cessations are considered to be permanent entities, and in particular, cessation by discrimination is considered to be the nature of many distinct entities of separation, equal in number to the objects to be abandoned. As it is said: What is cessation by discrimination? It is separation, each distinct. It permanently obstructs arising. Other cessation is not by discrimination. Furthermore, they believe that all beings with the nature of the three times with defilements obtain cessation by discrimination. Those with undefiled, future, non-arising dharmas obtain only non-discrimination. Those with undefiled past, present, and future arising dharmas do not obtain either cessation. Those with defiled, future, non-arising dharmas obtain both, while those with defiled past and present, and future arising dharmas, are considered to obtain only cessation by discrimination. Immovable is: in the state of being free from desire for the third dhyana of the Well-gone, but not yet free from desire for the fourth dhyana above it, all feelings of pleasure and pain are completely stopped. Cessation of perception and feeling is: as "nothingness," etc., as previously explained. In short, here, the non-affirming negation of the cessation of the seven aggregates together with their retinue at the time of entering cessation should be regarded as unconditioned. Why are these regarded as unconditioned? Because there are two things to be abandoned: afflictions and the feelings that are their basis. Feelings are also of two kinds: changing and unchanging. These are, in order, feelings of pleasure and pain, and feelings that are neither pain nor pleasure. Among these, the abandonment of afflictions establishes cessation by discrimination. The abandonment of the two kinds of feelings establishes, in order, the immovable and the cessation of perception and feeling. Among these, the abandonment of afflictions is the transformation of place because of separation from the bad states that are in accordance with it. The abandonment of feelings is the transformation of place because of separation from the obscurations of samadhi that are their antidote. Therefore, in the first dhyana, although the feeling of suffering ceases, all changing feelings
