If asked, what is the nature? What is the appearance? Answer: Whatever is not produced by causes and conditions, and is known to be merely nominally established, that is the nature of the unconditioned. Moreover, there are eight types of unconditioned phenomena, namely: the suchness of virtuous dharmas, etc. Among them, the nature of the suchness of virtue is the two types of selflessness of person and selflessness of phenomena. Its synonyms are emptiness, etc. The meaning of these synonyms is: selflessness itself does not change from its previous state to another form due to the power of conditions, so it is called suchness. By focusing on it and contemplating it properly, all afflictive dharmas such as desire will not increase and will be extinguished, so it is called emptiness. All the signs of elaboration from form to enlightenment are pacified, so it is called signlessness. Since it is the object of non-perversion of person and phenomena, it is called the ultimate reality. The non-conceptual wisdom of the noble ones is not deceptive in any way, so it is supreme, and the supreme wisdom is its object, so it is called ultimate meaning. Here, from meditating on the aspect of selflessness of person, the hearers and solitary realizers can generate realization and attain the noble dharma. From meditating on the aspect of selflessness of phenomena, the Buddha's dharma can arise, so it is the cause of all dharmas such as hearers, therefore it is called the element of dharma. These meanings are summarized in the verses of the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes, etc. Emptiness can be briefly summarized as: suchness and ultimate reality, signlessness and ultimate meaning, and the element of dharma are all synonyms. It is other, not inverted, its cessation is the object of the noble ones, and it is the cause of the noble dharma, the synonyms and meanings are in that order. Thus. Just as the nature, synonyms, and the meaning of the synonyms of the suchness of virtuous dharmas are, so too should the nature, synonyms, and the meaning of the synonyms of the suchness of non-virtuous and neutral dharmas be viewed in the same way.
