Moreover, each one becomes the immediately preceding condition for all six consciousnesses. According to these views, whichever of the six consciousnesses has just ceased, that is called mind because it is the basis of consciousness for the sixth consciousness, the mind. As it is said: To accomplish the basis of the sixth, it is said that there are eighteen realms. And: The sixth, immediately after ceasing, is the mind; whichever consciousness it is, that is the mind. Those who assert that multiple consciousnesses arise simultaneously do not consider that whatever has just ceased of the eye consciousness is not what opens the way for the arising of other consciousnesses of a different kind, such as mind consciousness. For when the eye consciousness has arisen and is not yet ceased, there is no contradiction to the arising of other consciousnesses of a different kind, so they do not cease the opportunity to arise. If it is asserted that it opens the way merely by not obstructing their arising, then, because of that, everything opens the way for everything, so it would be too extreme for everything to become the immediately preceding condition of everything, like the agent of the Vaibhashikas. Therefore, the immediately ceasing eye consciousness and so forth are not the immediately preceding condition of consciousnesses that are not of the same kind as themselves. The consciousness that has just ceased of the six is not considered the mind because it serves as the basis of the sixth consciousness, the mind, but rather because it has become the immediately preceding condition of the later consciousness of the same kind as itself, therefore it is called mind. Why does it become the basis of the later consciousness of the same kind? Even according to the tenets of those who assert that multiple consciousnesses arise simultaneously, there is no place or opportunity for two consciousnesses of the same kind to arise simultaneously. Therefore, as long as the eye consciousness has arisen and not yet ceased, there is no place in that continuum for a second eye consciousness to arise. When the second eye consciousness arises after the previous eye consciousness has ceased, it is because of the power of the previous cessation that the opportunity for the later one to arise is obtained. Therefore, the previous one is the immediately preceding condition of the later one. Therefore, one consciousness does not

It is impossible for multiple similar consciousnesses to act as the immediately preceding condition. Even similar consciousnesses can only be the condition for one individual, not for many, because multiple similar consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously. Therefore, in the Pramāṇavārttika, it is said, "These can only transform their potential from the same category." This is what is meant here. Furthermore, in the Pañcaskandhaprakaraṇa, it is said, "The collection of the six consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness, immediately after their cessation, is called 'mind,' and this is precisely to establish the place of the sixth consciousness, the mind consciousness." What is said here is also according to the tenets of certain schools, and it seems inconsistent with the view that multiple consciousnesses arise simultaneously. In the commentary on the Trimśikā, it is also said, "From the immediately preceding condition of the ālaya-vijñāna arises the entering consciousness, and even a single immediately preceding condition does not produce multiple consciousnesses." What is said here is merely without detailed analysis of the meaning of the immediately preceding condition. The explanation of mind is finished. Afterwards, it is appropriate to explain consciousness, and therefore it is said, 'What is consciousness?' The brief answer to this question is: There are six types of consciousness, namely, eye consciousness and so on. The consciousness that arises from both object and sense faculty is named after the sense faculty, such as eye consciousness and so on. Why are they not named after the object, such as color consciousness and so on? Because the sense faculties such as the eye are the unique bases upon which those consciousnesses rely, therefore, if they are named after those sense faculties, that consciousness can be understood without confusion. For example, the sound of a drum and the sprout of barley. The objects such as color are not unique like the sense faculties, because color and so on are also objects of mind consciousness, and one object can be commonly experienced by the sense consciousnesses of multiple individuals. Therefore, if they are named after the object, such as color consciousness, then mind consciousness may also be mistaken for color consciousness and so on.
