Therefore, in the Compendium on the Great Vehicle, it says: "That which constantly becomes an obstacle to the mind in observing the true meaning, and arises at all times, is called unshared ignorance." This is what is said. In the commentary, it says that this is unshared in its basis because it relies solely on the afflicted mind, just like the unshared qualities of the Buddha. So it is said. In the Explanation of the Hidden Meaning, it is explained that because of this, other afflictions such as the view of self arise, and because it is a real entity with its own nature, it is unshared in its function. Why does this rely solely on the afflicted mind? In this regard, the consciousness of mind is not suitable as its basis, because it sometimes ceases, while this arises constantly until the truth is seen. Furthermore, because this arises constantly, if it were to possess the same nature as the consciousness of mind, it would always be only afflicted and would not become virtuous or neutral. For those reasons, the sense consciousnesses are also not suitable as its basis. The alaya-consciousness is also only the ripening, unobscured, and neutral, so it is not suitable as its basis. Therefore, the consciousness on which unshared ignorance relies is another consciousness called the afflicted mind. Furthermore, if there were no afflicted mind, then the consciousness of mind would also have the fault of being no different from the five sense consciousnesses. In this way, the co-emergent basis of the sense consciousnesses is the senses that are simultaneous with it, and its immediate basis is the immediately preceding mind. The basis of the consciousness of mind is only the past, and it is not reasonable to have no co-emergent basis, because it is contradicted by inference. How is it contradicted? Whatever is a transforming consciousness has a co-emergent basis, just like the sense consciousnesses, and the consciousness of mind is also a transforming consciousness, which is the reason of the result. The eyes and so on are...

This is not a place of co-arising, because after their transformation, the consciousness of mind does not change. Therefore, it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "When the faculties are each damaged, the mind's intellect is not harmed." This is what is said. The Vaibhāṣikas' saying that the mind relies on one to nine heart-channels is also unreasonable, because it is contradicted by inference. Thus, whatever is the consciousness of mind, it does not rely on material things, like the four consciousnesses of mind in the formless realm. Whatever consciousness is asserted to rely on heart-channels, that is also the consciousness of mind, which is the establishment of a contradictory pervasion. The ālaya-vijñāna is also not a place of co-arising, because it is the common cause of all six entering consciousnesses. Thus, the consciousness of mind has an uncommon co-arising support, because it is an entering consciousness, like eye consciousness. Furthermore, if it is called mind because it constantly thinks with the meaning of conceit, then there is the fault of not having such a definition, because the entering consciousnesses sometimes cease, and sometimes there is no conceit. Furthermore, there would be no difference between quiescence and non-quiescence in the samādhi of non-perception and the samādhi of cessation, because both are the same in merely stopping the six aggregates, and there is no difference between stopping and not stopping the afflicted mind. If there is an afflicted mind, then the noble ones can stop it, so the samādhi of cessation is extremely quiescent because it is stopped, while ordinary beings cannot stop the afflicted mind, so the samādhi of non-perception is not quiescent because it possesses it. Therefore, there is a difference in the abiding of noble ones and non-noble ones in them. Furthermore, if there is no afflicted mind, then there would be no self-grasping in the continuum of beings born in the realm of non-perception, because the six entering consciousnesses have ceased, and another consciousness that serves as the basis for self-grasping is not accepted.
