There are two types, namely the ability to generate the superimposition on persons and the superimposition on phenomena. When noble Hearers and Solitary Buddhas enter the path, since they see the selflessness of persons, it is not the second kind of superimposition and elimination, because it is only the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, they have defiled minds, but since these minds are not associated with afflictions, they are obscured and unlabelled, but not obscured. Bodhisattvas see both kinds of selflessness, so they eliminate all superimpositions, therefore it is said that they are only undefiled. This second view is well-spoken, like if the noble path is manifested and there is no more learning, and in the pure lands, if the entity of the mind is destroyed, since there is no co-emergent basis, at those times, neither the defiled nor the undefiled consciousness of the mind will arise, and the fault of being no different from the five will occur, and if there is no entity of the mind above the eighth ground, then the mind itself cannot become the equality wisdom at the end of the Vajra-like Samadhi. If according to the first view, even if it is admitted that there is an undefiled mind at those times, it would follow that Hearers and Solitary Buddhas also have a complete transformation of the mind. Therefore, only the second view is good. Thus, just as the Alaya consciousness and the Vipaka consciousness, and the mirror-like wisdom, so too, the afflicted mind and the equality wisdom should be viewed in the same way. Among them, as long as the mind is associated with those four afflictions, then the mind is both mind and afflicted. When it is not associated with those four afflictions, since the defiled or undefiled consciousness of the mind acts as a co-emergent basis, it is mind but not afflicted. When the corresponding four afflictions are eliminated, the name of the elimination of the afflicted mind is obtained. When this mind itself

When all forms of faults are absent, the mind transforms and obtains the name of Equality Wisdom. For children, it is entirely afflicted. For learners of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages, when they are not abiding on the path, it is entirely afflicted. When abiding on the path, because it is unconfused and indeterminate, it is not afflicted, but merely mind. In the state of no-more-learning, it is also just mind as before, and in the realm of nirvana without remainder, the continuum will be cut off. When Bodhisattvas abide on the noble path, it is the transformed, uncontaminated mind. When one arises from the path, below the seventh ground, the mind arises in conjunction with the four afflictions, so it is entirely afflicted. Above the eighth ground, the mind does not arise in conjunction with the four afflictions, so although it is not afflicted, because it engages with subtle obscurations and imputations regarding the Dharma, it is not entirely virtuous or uncontaminated, and is called the unconfused and indeterminate mind. In the engagement of the Vajra-like Samadhi, because it is free from all imputations of person and Dharma, it is without fault, and when only the self-nature, completely pure and luminous, is manifest, it is called Equality Wisdom, which, as long as samsara exists, naturally engages in a continuous stream. Thus, the minds of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and those abiding on the irreversible grounds are not transformed because they are the co-emergent cause of the arising of the appearance of imputing phenomena to consciousness, and therefore they do not obtain the name of Equality Wisdom. The concise treatise that establishes this afflicted mind is as follows, as stated in the Thirty Verses: 'It depends and arises, its object is called mind, consciousness is self-centered, unconfused and indeterminate, always accompanied by the four afflictions, the conceiving of self, the ignorance of self, the pride of self, the attachment to self, wherever it is born, it is other than that, touch and so on are also cut off by it.'

There is not. There is not in the absorption of cessation. There is not in the path of transcendence. This is the second turning. Thus it is said. Now, the proof will be stated. How is it shown that the mind with the characteristics described above exists? From scripture and reasoning. Among them, briefly, the scripture is from the miscellaneous collection: The afflicted mind is always, Born and arises together with afflictions, It from all the afflictions, Will not be liberated until liberated. And also in other sutras it is said: Mind is the consciousness of all basis, Consciousness is self-mind and mind, Whatever grasps at the object, That is called consciousness. Thus it is said mind, mind, and consciousness. In terms of reasoning, from the Compendium of the Great Vehicle: Non-common ignorance, And the five are the same, And the fault of no definition. The difference of equipoise, And the continuum of unconscious birth, The fault of no self-grasping. Those who have self-grasping, Are not reasonable in any way. If there is no afflicted mind, The three non-duals will be contradictory, If there is no that, then the self-grasping, Will not be always present. Thus it is said. The meaning is this: If there is no afflicted mind, then there will be no non-common ignorance, because it has no basis. If there is no that, then the suchness of all beings will be seen without effort, because it is free from the ignorance that hinders seeing it. What is the nature of this so-called non-common ignorance? To this, the Vaibhashika school says that it is associated with the consciousness of mind, is the basis for seeing the truth, is abandoned by the path of seeing, and is not associated with other afflictions such as desire, so it is called non-common or unique. The Mahayana school considers there to be two: one is the co-emergent view of the aggregates that arises in the retinue of the consciousness of mind, and the ignorance that is associated with it. That only arises occasionally, not always. The second is that which always arises, associated with the afflicted mind, this is what is to be established here.
