Therefore, the knowledge that one wishes to manifest will not be understood without error. Therefore, it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Having seen what enables understanding, names are definitely applied; that is how it is with the names of the senses." And in the Compendium of Valid Cognition it is also said: "Because of being a unique cause, the senses apply names." This is what is said. In the commentary, it is explained that it is reasonable to apply words to the senses in five ways, but it is not reasonable to apply words to objects. Although this is how it is explained, the application of words only follows the speaker's intention and not the power of things. Therefore, there is no reason why applying words to objects is unreasonable, so it is not considered reasonable. So, does the eye see form, or does consciousness see? To this, the Vaibhāṣikas say that only the sense organ with a basis sees, and not consciousness. Some Sautrāntikas say that only consciousness sees, because the sense organ is inanimate and therefore cannot see. To this, it is correct to say that since all phenomena have no agent, no one sees, but conventionally it can be established that the two together see. Among them, in six ways, the eye is the main thing in seeing form: like the cause of arising, because it arises from the eye; like its place, because the basis of seeing is the eye; like its unwavering entry, because the nature of the eye is always the same; like its independent entry, because its arising in each moment does not depend on the collection of conditions; like its beautiful entry, because it makes the place beautiful; like scripture, because the scriptures say that the eye sees forms. All that has been said above is impossible for consciousness. Furthermore, among the six consciousnesses, which are conceptual and which are non-conceptual? In terms of three kinds of conceptualization, only mental consciousness is conceptual, like conceptualization by nature, and subsequently

They are the discrimination of recollection and the discrimination of manifest action. The first is the discrimination of one's own nature when experiencing present action. The second is the discrimination of previously experienced action. The third is the discrimination of those hidden in the three times. Again, there are seven discriminations: the discrimination that enters into its object by its own nature, the one with signs, the one without signs, the one that seeks everywhere, the one that discriminates separately, the one with afflictions, and the discrimination that is without afflictions. The first is the five aggregates of consciousness, because without grasping the appearance of the object, it enters by its own nature as its own object is. The second is the discrimination of nature and recollection, because they grasp the appearance of past and present objects. The third is whatever discrimination the future makes on this object. The rest should be known as the nature of the discrimination of manifest conduct, because it sometimes manifestly knows and seeks everywhere, sometimes discriminates separately, sometimes becomes afflicted, and sometimes becomes unafflicted. In order to explain the six aggregates of consciousness in general and then show them one by one, it is said, "What is eye consciousness?" Each of these should be understood by three things: the basis, the object, and its own nature. That is, "relying on the eye" indicates eye consciousness from the point of view of its basis. "Focusing on form" is from the point of view of the object. "Separately distinguishing" shows the nature. The others should be applied in the same way, it is easy to understand. Consciousness has been explained, and all of that has been explained as a distinction through the door of well establishing the five aggregates. Now is the appropriate time for the distinction of realms and sources, so let them be explained. Among them, first wanting to establish the nature of the realms, it is said, "What is the distinction of the realms?" Previously, the dharmas of form and so on, which had been established as the five aggregates,

They are established as realms, and whatever is established as realms is established as sources. Realms apart from aggregates, and sources apart from realms, do not exist elsewhere. Therefore, realms are established by distinguishing them from aggregates. Sources are established by distinguishing them from realms. Among them, whatever phenomena are established as the aggregate of form become the ten form realms, such as the eye realm and so on. Moreover, they are also a part of the dharma realm, namely the five forms included in the dharma source. Whatever is established as the aggregates of feeling, perception, and mental formations becomes a part of the dharma realm. Whatever phenomena are established as the aggregate of consciousness become the seven consciousness realms, such as the eye consciousness realm and so on. Among them, the mind that is afflicted and the six that have just ceased are the mind realm. Whatever is said to be consciousness is the six consciousness realms, such as the eye consciousness realm and so on. Whatever is said to be mind, namely the base consciousness, is the nature of all seven realms. Because both the seed and the maturation are the cause and dominant condition for the seven consciousnesses. Moreover, the term 'realm' is also explained as having the meaning of cause. Therefore, accumulating its seeds, and the maturation, the base consciousness, as previously stated. If all phenomena established as aggregates are included in the realms, are the phenomena established as realms also included in the aggregates? No. If so, among the realms, what phenomena are not included by the aggregates? Namely, the unconditioned that exists in the dharma realm, because for it, there is no meaning of aggregate. For example, form and so on are gathered and piled up with aspects such as past and future, or they are aggregates in the sense of bearing a burden and so on. But the unconditioned is not permanently existent, so those are not suitable. The self of the unconditioned
