At that time, when consciousness arises in conjunction with virtuous qualities such as faith, it is not reasonable to consider that consciousness itself is the seed of those qualities. This is because those qualities, such as faith, that arise simultaneously with oneself do not arise and cease together with other instances of faith. Furthermore, others do not accept that cause and effect occur simultaneously. It is also not possible to say that one's previous consciousness, whether afflicted or unobscured and indeterminate, possesses the seed of faith, because those states of consciousness do not arise and cease together with faith, and therefore do not have a specific predisposition for faith. If they were to arise and cease together with faith, they would become virtuous rather than afflicted or indeterminate, which would be the same as what is to be proven. It is also not possible to say that the predispositions of virtuous qualities previously born in the desire realm and the form realm arise from those realms, because they are interrupted by many different types of consciousness. At that time, there is no other consciousness. There is no sense consciousness, and the mental consciousness arises in conjunction with faith and other qualities, and because the alaya-consciousness is not accepted. Therefore, the mental consciousness of sentient beings born in the formless realms that arises as virtuous will become causeless. If that were the case, it would be extremely excessive for even those who have severed the root of virtue to generate virtuous qualities such as faith. Similarly, according to the reasoning explained above, the minds of those born in the formless realms that arise as afflicted will arise without a cause. If that were the case, it would be extremely excessive for even arhats to generate afflictions. Furthermore, when noble non-returners born in that realm directly realize supramundane mind, their existence will cease, because if there is no alaya-consciousness, there is no other mind that can serve as the basis for designating existence. The noble path itself cannot be designated as existence, because it is the antidote to existence. Existence ceases.

Moreover, this is not reasonable, because it would follow that (consciousness) would pass into nirvana in a realm where there are no remaining aggregates. Similarly, because of being born at the peak of existence, when the path beyond the world is manifestly realized by relying on sentient beings who have no non-returners whatsoever, the sphere of activity of both of those would cease, because all of the contaminated minds of both of those have ceased. It has already been explained that taking rebirth is unreasonable. If there were no ālaya-vijñāna, then the gradual loss of warmth from the soles of the feet and the crown of the head, respectively, at the time of death and transmigration by those who perform good deeds and those who perform evil deeds would become impossible. Because there is no other consciousness that would do so. That gradual loss of warmth is also due to being apprehended by consciousness and not being apprehended. Because such a change has not been seen in things not apprehended by the mind. For the time being, the consciousness of the body is not reasonable, because even in the state of being alive, whatever limb of the body in which the consciousness of the body arises, even if that limb is apprehended by the mind, it would follow that other limbs that are not apprehended would lose warmth and the faculties would decay, etc. For the same reason, the other four, such as eye consciousness, are also not reasonable, because the body that abides in a severed support does not pervade all parts. If it is said that the faculty of the body pervades all limbs, so it gradually loses it from the upper or lower part. If so, this needs to be examined, whether the faculty of the body decays in this way due to the abandonment of consciousness, or whether it changes in this way even if it is not abandoned. If it is the former, then it needs to be examined which consciousness's abandonment causes the faculty of the body to be withdrawn from the upper or lower part, whether that consciousness is the entering consciousness or another consciousness. The entering consciousness is unreasonable in this case. If it is said that even without the abandonment of consciousness, the faculty of the body will decay, that is unreasonable, because if the faculty of the body decays, it is unreasonable for consciousness not to be abandoned. If it is said that the consciousness of the mind abandons warmth, then
