So, does the eye consciousness that arises together with them place the seeds of attachment, etc., in them? Or does it place the seeds of attachment, etc., in other entering consciousnesses? Or, the eye consciousness always places its seeds in its own subsequent similar kinds, because there is no other possible way. In this regard, according to the first view, the eye consciousness that arises together with attachment, etc., is not the place of the seeds from which subsequent attachment, etc., arise, because the subsequent attachment, etc., have passed in time and therefore do not exist. Even if it is not the place from which subsequent attachment, etc., arise, it cannot be said that it has the seeds of attachment, etc., because the seed is the cause of the subsequent fruit that arises in accordance with it. The second view is also unreasonable, because attachment, etc., are themselves mental factors, and each moment arises dependent on the mind, so they are impermanent, and instability itself is not the basis of habit, like lightning and sound, etc. For the same reason, the view that the eye consciousness that arises together with attachment, etc., places their habits in attachment, etc., is also unreasonable. The view that the eye consciousness that arises together with attachment, etc., places the habits of attachment, etc., in other entering consciousnesses such as the ear, etc., is also unreasonable, because the entering consciousnesses do not arise and cease together, because the objects, faculties, and attention are different, so they are not related to each other, which has already been said. The view that the eye consciousness that arises together with attachment, etc., places its habits in its own subsequent similar kinds is also unreasonable, because it does not arise and cease together with them. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that the eye consciousness is the place of application of the habits of attachment, etc. How can the eye consciousness be the basis of the habits of attachment, etc., in other entering consciousnesses?

This should also be understood by the same previous reasoning. Furthermore, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, then having died and transmigrated from the state of non-perception, the afflicted consciousness that arises in the desire realm, which arises at the time of linking to rebirth, will also arise without its own seed. This is because the previous seeds of desire realm afflictions have ceased along with their location. And the previous similar minds of the intermediate state, whether virtuous or unobscured and unindicated, have not arisen and ceased together with afflictions, so it is unreasonable for them to have the seeds of those afflictions. Therefore, the cause of arising in such an afflicted state, the support of the seeds of those afflictions, is not reasonable to be other than the ālaya-vijñāna. Furthermore, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, then the first afflicted mind that arises after arising from the noble path will arise from no seed. Thus, when the noble path is manifest, the worldly consciousnesses that engage in activities other than it cease, and cannot serve as the support for the seeds of afflictions. And the noble path itself cannot be the place for the seeds of afflictions, because its nature is liberation and it is the antidote to afflictions. Therefore, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, when the path of seeing arises, the seeds of all afflictions and near afflictions will be cut off, and after that, like an arhat, afflictions will never arise again. If that were the case, the path of seeing itself would be completely liberated, and the path of meditation would be meaningless. If afflictions arise without seeds, then afflictions would also arise in arhats, which is too extreme. Therefore, even when the noble path is manifest, there is the ālaya-vijñāna, which is the place of the seeds from which subsequent afflictions arise. The pervasively defiled nature of afflictions has been explained. Now, the pervasively defiled nature of karma will be explained, namely, the unreasonableness of consciousness due to the condition of formations, and the unreasonableness of existence due to the condition of grasping.
