Whatever exists is the fundamental cause and condition for all defiled dharmas. Therefore, because of its existence, beings will experience the suffering of birth and death in the cycle of the five realms. This is the basis for the current argument: the realm that is the abode of all defiled dharmas and from which all beings arise is none other than the all-ground consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna) that contains all seeds. Whatever seed belongs to the side of purification is the abode or fundamental cause and condition for all pure dharmas. Because of its existence, ultimately, nirvāṇa will be attained. Through gradually familiarizing oneself with it through hearing, contemplation, and meditation, etc., the wisdom free from outflows, such as the path of seeing, will arise. Grasping this essential point, in the commentary on the Ratnagotravibhāga, this very verse is cited as the basis for the tathāgatagarbha. Alternatively, "the realm of beginningless time" refers to the ālaya-vijñāna, because its continuum is without beginning. The term "realm" (dhātu) signifies cause, and this (ālaya-vijñāna) is also the cause of all contaminated dharmas. This is the all-seed of all defiled dharmas, and the contaminated and uncontaminated seeds of both worldly and trans-worldly (dharmas) also rely on it. Therefore, this is said to be "the abode of all dharmas." That is to say, all defiled and pure dharmas arise in dependence upon it. Why do defiled and pure dharmas rely on this? If this (ālaya-vijñāna) did not exist, then the three defilements of affliction, action, and birth would be impossible, and the two purities, worldly and trans-worldly, would also be impossible, because there would be no other basis for their seeds. Therefore, this is the basis for all defiled and pure dharmas. Grasping this essential point, it is said (in the scripture), "Because of its existence, all beings and nirvāṇa will be attained."

This is to show the meaning of the Alaya-consciousness, and the second is to show both name and meaning. I have spoken to the noble ones, which means that it is shown to the Bodhisattvas who follow the attainment of the wisdom of omniscience, and they are also more deeply involved in the knowledge of what is to be known, and it is not easy to know all that is to be known without this. The others are only understood. These are temporarily scriptures. For those who temporarily follow faith in scriptures that are not rational, they will not be trusted, let alone those who follow the Dharma? Therefore, a little reason should be stated after that. There are two kinds of reason, namely, the reason that is famous in the treatises, and the reason that is famous in the treatises and the world. In terms of the first reason, in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it is said: "If the Alaya-consciousness established in this way does not exist, then the purification of all defilements is impossible, and the all-pervasive defilements of defilements, the all-pervasive defilements of karma, and the all-pervasive defilements of life are also impossible, and the purification of the world and the world beyond is also impossible." As it is said, it should be inferred from the unreasonableness of all-pervasive defilements and the unreasonableness of purification. The unreasonableness of all-pervasive defilements should also be inferred from the fact that the habits of the six aggregates and other defilements cannot be relied upon, and that the first defilement that arises immediately after death from unconsciousness has no seed, and that when the worldly mind has just risen from the transcendental path, it is inferred from the three situations that there is no seed. The first of these is that if the Alaya-consciousness does not exist, then the six entering consciousnesses cannot be relied upon as the seeds of defilements such as greed, so they will never arise, because there is no cause. Why can't the entering consciousness be relied upon as the basis of habits such as greed? Because, the eye consciousness cannot be relied upon as the seed of greed, etc. For example, the eye consciousness that arises simultaneously with greed, etc., is it the seed for itself? Or does it open the door for itself?
