Because of the difference in the complete transformation of the inner seeds that exist in the ālaya-vijñāna of sentient beings, the seeds of rice, barley, etc., appear externally. Therefore, the external seeds arise from the inner seeds as a cause, and are not other than that. The nature of the seeds has already been explained. If one does not comprehend the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna, which possesses all the seeds as described above, then all the bad views that conceive of a maker such as the chief and Īśvara in those things that have become external to this Dharma will arise. If one comprehends it in this way, then those views will be reversed and one will realize the profound suchness of dependent origination. Thus, as it is said: In brief, dependent origination is of two types: the differentiation of intrinsic nature and the differentiation of suffering and happiness. That which arises from the dharmas based on the ālaya-vijñāna is the differentiation of intrinsic nature, because it is the entity of the cause that differentiates various intrinsic natures. That which is the twelve links of dependent origination is the differentiation of suffering and happiness, because it is the entity of the cause of the various differentiations of bodies of suffering and happiness in the happy and unhappy realms. Those who are ignorant of the first dependent origination, the ālaya-vijñāna, think that it arises from a cause of nature. Some think that it arises from a cause of previous actions. Some think that it arises from a cause made by Īśvara. Some think that it is without cause and without condition. Those who are ignorant of the second dependent origination think of the self as the agent and the enjoyer. For example, just as there are many blind people who have never seen an elephant, and someone shows them an elephant, some of them touch the elephant's trunk, some touch the tusk, some touch the ear, some touch the leg, and some touch the tail.

When the hand touches the spine of the elephant, and they are asked what the elephant is like, some say it is like a plow shaft. Some say it is like a pestle. Some say it is like a winnowing basket. Some say it is like the base of a pestle. Some say it is like a broom. Some say it is like a stone. Similarly, because they do not understand these two—dependent origination, they are like the blind. Regarding the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna, which is like an elephant, and those who do not understand cause and effect, some think it is self-nature, some think it arises from previous actions, some think it is Īśvara, some think it has a self, some think it arises without cause, some think it is the agent, some think it is the eater. In short, the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna is the vipāka-vijñāna, the collection of all seeds. It encompasses all bodies and all beings of the three realms. This is what is said. Thus, the explanation of how the ālaya-vijñāna is considered to be the nature of Mahābrahmā is finished. Now, we will state its proof. How does the ālaya-vijñāna, which has the names and characteristics as described above, appear to exist as something different from the pravṛtti-vijñānas and other consciousnesses? Through scripture and reasoning. First, the scripture is as follows: For example, in the Mahāyāna Abhidharma Sūtra, it says: "The realm of beginningless time, is the basis of all dharmas, because of its existence, all beings and, nirvāṇa can also be attained." And, in the same text: "The seed of all dharmas, is the ālaya-vijñāna, therefore, I have explained the ālaya-vijñāna, to the noble ones." This is what is said. Among them, the meaning of the first verse is: The so-called "realm of beginningless time" refers to holding both the seeds of the completely defiled side and the seeds of the completely purified side. Among them, the seeds of the completely defiled side
