Even impermanent things cannot serve as the basis for the growth of karmic imprints. This is because if the specific basis of something is interrupted, then the imprints associated with it will also disappear. If this were the case, the ripening of the fruits of karma would be wasted due to the absence of a cause, which is not reasonable. As stated in the sutra: "The actions of sentient beings will not be wasted even after hundreds of eons. When the conditions gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into their own fruits." There is also a logical reason for this. In the external world, things like sesame seeds, which continue in a continuous stream, are seen to absorb the fragrance of flowers and the like. However, things that lack continuity, like sound, or are extremely volatile, like the wind, are not seen to absorb the fragrance of flowers. Therefore, the basis for the growth of imprints must be something that continues in a continuous stream throughout all rebirths in samsara. Such a continuously flowing stream must have a nature that does not differentiate between objects and appearances and is not clear. This is because only then can the power of any kind of growth, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral, enter, because its own nature is very weak. Things that differentiate between objects and appearances and are very clear are not suitable as a basis for the growth of imprints because their own nature is powerful and there is no opportunity for the power of others to enter. In the external world, substances with very strong odors, such as musk and garlic, do not absorb the odors of other substances such as flowers. However, substances with similar and weak odors, such as sesame seeds, are seen to absorb the odors of flowers. Therefore, the seven consciousnesses, which differentiate between objects and appearances and are clear, cannot serve as a basis for growth. Even if something continues in a continuous stream and does not differentiate between objects and appearances, like the permanent "self" of the Samkhya school, it cannot be changed by conditions. And those things that cannot be changed by conditions cannot have the power of growth enter them, so they cannot serve as a basis for growth. Otherwise, it must be something that can generate the distinctions of growth and allow power to enter. Furthermore, this must be connected to the factors of growth in the same continuum and at the same time. If it belongs to another continuum, or the gro

Those that act as doors and appear sequentially are not suitable as the basis for storage because they are not related to the door. Thus, it is possible for the function of the door to operate because the continuum continues in all lifetimes, and also because the objects and aspects are indistinct, unclear, and impermanent. That which possesses the characteristic of being related to the door and the same continuum at the same time is none other than the alaya-consciousness. Therefore, the view that only the alaya-consciousness is the basis for the storage of habits is established. These reasons are also stated in the *Compendium on the Great Vehicle*: “Steadfast, unspecified is the door, from being related to the function of the door, the function of the door is not other than that. This is the nature of habit.” This is how it is explained. Among these, the explanation of "unspecified" as unspecified whether virtuous or non-virtuous by some commentators is not seen as reasonable. If that were the case, then the afflicted mind should also be the basis for the storage of habits, because it fulfills the meaning of the verse "steadfast, unspecified." If it is said that this is because the continuum of phenomena such as the arising of the supramundane path is severed, that alone is not impermanent, as it is said that among the mind and mental factors that are steadfast, some are also said to be steadfast. Therefore, the meaning of unspecified, as I have said, is reasonable to understand as the meaning of indistinct and unclear objects and aspects. If it is said that the characteristics described above are also possessed by the mental factors that are the retinue of the alaya-consciousness, and therefore they would also become the basis for the storage of habits, that is not the case. Because mental factors arise relying on the mind moment by moment, and there is no continuum of the later arising from the earlier of the same kind, they are not steadfast. Alternatively, whatever is suitable as a support is the basis for being the door, otherwise it cannot be the support for habits. Mental factors are only dependent on others, and do not have the power to exist independently without relying on others. Therefore, they are not suitable as the support for the storage of habits. Some people say that only the six aggregates of consciousness are the basis for being the door.
