The mind consciousness that does not naturally abide due to being disturbed by conditions is called indistinct in terms of object and appearance. It is not a gateway for habit, regardless of whether it arises in the nature of virtue or non-virtue. When it is not disturbed by conditions and abides naturally, it is said that the objects are clear. At that time, those that arise as virtuous or non-virtuous are the gateway for karmic habits. Those that are not indicated establish the habits of expression. Among the sense consciousnesses, whatever is said to be the mind consciousness abiding naturally, and whatever arises simultaneously on one object, are called those with clear objects and appearances. Those that arise as virtuous or non-virtuous are the gateway for karmic habits. Those that have become unindicated also become the gateway for habits of similar causes. The sense consciousnesses and the indistinct mind consciousnesses that are disturbed by conditions, and those that arise simultaneously on one object, and the temporary sense consciousnesses when the mind abides naturally but is distracted by other objects, etc., are called those with indistinct objects and appearances. They are not gateways for habits, regardless of whether they arise as virtuous, non-virtuous, or unindicated. The nature of what makes a gateway for habits is such. What is the basis for what should be established? It is only what belongs to the continuum of sentient beings, not external objects, because they have no connection with the acting gateway. If the habit is established in someone, the result will also ripen in them. However, it is not reasonable for the result of karma to ripen in the external realm, as the sutra says: "The ripening of actions done and accumulated is not in the external earth element," and so on, "but ripens in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that have been taken." Therefore, it is said. Among those belonging to the continuum of sentient beings, the eye and so on are not suitable as a basis for establishing habits, because they are not constant in all lifetimes when wandering in samsara, because the continuum ceases when born in the formless realm. The continuum is interrupted in the intermediate state,
