Only that (state) remains. When only that manifests, it is praised in the world as good gold, but the two states of being defiled and pure are the same in terms of true and luminous nature. Similarly, this mind, when accompanied by afflictions such as desire, does not abandon its own nature and arise as their essence. However, one's own nature is obscured by the power of the afflictions and does not appear, while the nature of afflictions such as desire becomes very clear like impurities in gold. At that time, that mind is also given names such as afflicted and defiled. When, through the path, afflictions and conceptualizations are well purified like impurities in gold, and the mind's own nature manifests as merely pure and luminous, that mind is also given names such as mirror-like wisdom, but there is not the slightest difference from its previous nature. Again, what is the meaning of knowing purity and luminosity? It means that one's own essence does not arise as the nature of defilement, just as water is naturally pure. The mind also originally arises as a nature of purity, but it becomes defiled due to the power of conditions. Without conditions, it is called luminous because it clearly reveals its own true state, like the light of a lamp. Minds are also mistaken in thinking of purity, happiness, permanence, self, etc., as inverted due to the condition of improper attention, but if that condition is removed, then one's own true state, the non-dual Suchness, will clearly reveal itself. Therefore, the mind is called naturally pure and luminous. In this way, if one understands the meaning of the mind's natural luminosity and purity, one can easily understand the meaning of the definitive sutras and the profound instructions of those secret teachings. The water element, gold, and space, etc., are desired to be pure as purity. And so on, one will also understand the meaning of the texts that show transformation without error. The manner of the Alaya-consciousness entering and returning is established.
