How can the alaya-vijnana, as the basis, transform into mirror-like wisdom after being separated from defilements and undergoing transformation? Even if coal is refined as much as possible by conditions, it will not turn into a conch shell! Some say that the nature of the alaya-vijnana is defilement, so its essence will never become wisdom, but when it is abandoned by the path, another mirror-like wisdom will arise anew. According to these people, mirror-like wisdom and so on become causeless and sudden because they lack a common cause. And the vijnanas such as the alaya are inherently completely afflicted, like those arising from desire, so they are not made completely afflicted by sudden conditions. For that very reason, it is also not naturally luminous. That is also unreasonable, because the sutra says: The mind is naturally luminous, It is the mind that obscures it. And: This mind has been completely afflicted by desire for a long time. And: Mind is no-mind, the nature of mind is luminous. And so on. If you think that this refers to the naturally luminous nature of mind, then is not the nature of the afflictions naturally luminous? Why is it necessary to fixate on the mind alone, saying that the nature of mind is luminous? Furthermore, if afflictions such as desire and minds are the same in being naturally completely afflicted, then why is it necessary to fixate on desire and so on, and then say that they make it afflicted? Therefore, minds arise from the cause and condition of their own similar preceding type, in the nature of being naturally luminous. And afflictions such as desire arise from their own cause as completely afflicted. Therefore, they are of the nature of defilement, so the antidote also cuts off the continuum of their similar type. And minds become defiled by the power of associating with other afflictions, but it is not their own nature, so they can also be transformed by the path.

It is not the case that similar lineages are severed. If done in this way, the meaning of the sutras previously cited will be well understood. Otherwise, it is not. Therefore, the unconditioned nature of the eight consciousnesses of beings in their various states, and the wisdoms such as the mirror-like wisdom of the Buddha into which these consciousnesses are transformed, are the same because they are all of a luminous and pure nature. It is only with this in mind that it is said that beings possess the qualities such as the Buddha's powers and wisdoms from the very beginning, and this is explained with the simile of the great silk cloth of the three thousand great thousand worlds. However, both those who say that qualities such as powers have a permanent nature and actually exist, and those who explain that this is with regard to the nature of these qualities, are understood to be incorrect. Thus, the nature of mind is unconditioned, so how does it accord with the sutra which speaks of the qualities of the unconditioned? For example, just as fire is born from causes as its nature of heat, but in the world it is said that the heat of fire is not made by anyone, so too, minds are born with a nature of being pure and luminous, without being transformed by conditions, and therefore, it is with this in mind that it is said to be unconditioned. Since the essence of any mind whatsoever cannot be transformed by conditions into anything other than luminous, that luminous nature of theirs can also be called permanent, just as it is said that fire is always of the nature of heat. If it is the case that minds are born as defiled by conditions such as desire, how is it that it is said that their nature cannot be transformed by conditions? For example, when gold is stained, it is not the case that it abandons its nature of gold and is born as the essence of the stain, because if that were the case, it would be impossible to separate the gold from the stain by methods such as burning. However, when it is with the stain, the pure and luminous nature of the gold does not appear, so it is said that the gold is stained, but it is not said that it is good gold. When the stain is well purified by methods such as burning, and the nature becomes pure and luminous
