In the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one should observe an object that is extremely subtle. (This is what is said.) A brief summary of these meanings is also stated in the Thirty Verses: 'That dwells with feelings and so on, consciousness and non-consciousness.' (This is what is said.) The nature of the characteristics has been completely established. What comes up incidentally after that should be examined. For now, the way in which the alaya-consciousness enters and exits is as follows. As it is said in the Compendium: 'The entry of alaya-consciousness is established in four ways, and the exit is to be known as established in one way. That is, the establishment of entry by object, the establishment of entry by association, the establishment of entry by one cause being one, and the establishment of entry by co-emergent things. These four ways establish entry, and one way, which is the establishment of exit from all afflictions, should be known.' As it is said, we will explain. Among them, the way of entering by object has already been explained. Entering by association is: In that, what is the establishment of entering by association? Here, what is associated with the alaya-consciousness is the five ever-present mental factors associated with the mind: attention, contact, feeling, perception, and volition. These dharmas are also included in the result of maturation, and because they are difficult for the wise in the world to understand, they are subtle, and they always enter into the same object. Among these mental factors, what is the feeling that is associated with the alaya-consciousness? That is definitely neither painful nor pleasant, and is neutral. He himself also separately explained the other mental dharmas besides that. This is what is said, and the summary of that meaning is also stated in the Thirty Verses: 'Always associated with contact and attention, contact and the agent are connected to thought. Among them, feeling is equanimity, that is unpolluted and neutral.' This is what is said. The five determined objects, because there is a distinction in the objects of focus, are not associated with this, this

Because it does not explicitly indicate the fruition of maturation, it is not the same as other minds arising from virtuous and afflicted minds. The establishment of entry (consciousness) as the sole cause is also such that, from it, the ālaya-vijñāna possesses seeds. What relies on it is that, relying on the colored sense faculties grasped by the ālaya-vijñāna, the five aggregates of consciousness will arise, but not those that are not grasped. Just as the support of the five aggregates of consciousness is like the eye, etc., if the ālaya-vijñāna, which is the support of mind and mental consciousness, exists, then mind and mental consciousness will also arise, and if it does not exist, then it will not arise. Entry (consciousness) performs the function of the cause of ālaya-vijñāna in two ways: causing the seeds of this life to fully ripen, and generating the seeds that will enable it to be seen in the next life. Causing the seeds of this life to fully ripen is: in whatever way entry (consciousness) arises, relying on the ālaya-vijñāna, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral, it imprints habits by arising and ceasing together with its own support in the same way. Because of that cause and that condition, the entering (consciousnesses) also become more and more familiar, more and more practiced, and more and more luminous objects of virtue, etc. The other kind of habit is that, in order to fully grasp the maturation of the ālaya-vijñāna itself in the next life, it will enter (the ālaya-vijñāna). Thus it is said. The meaning of this is: the ālaya-vijñāna, which has become the nature of maturation, is the cause of the lord of the seven aggregates of entry (consciousness), that is: because the five aggregates of consciousness transform from the five sense faculties such as the eye, etc., which are grasped by it, and because of its power, the afflicted mind arises in the form of self, and because of that reason, consciousness also depends on it. The seed nature of the ālaya is

The reason for that is that these seven consciousnesses arise from the cause of their respective manifest habitual tendencies. The entering consciousnesses are also the condition of the possessor of the nature of maturation, because they completely sow seeds for it. The nature of seeds is the causal condition, because they sow seeds. Therefore, the alaya and entering consciousnesses enter each other by means of the condition of one another. Among these, what enters together with co-emergent things is the entering consciousness, together with co-emergent things, feeling together with co-emergent things, virtue and so forth, and also co-emergent things should be known. Among these, the first is that the alaya consciousness sometimes enters together with only one entering consciousness, such as mind and non-existence. For example, the mind that grasps at self, and the pride that thinks "I am," which has the aspect of arrogance, always arises and enters together with the alaya consciousness, whether in a state of mind or mindlessness, because it is the aspect of clinging and arrogance that regards the alaya consciousness as "I am" and "mine." Sometimes, it arises and enters together with both mind and consciousness. Sometimes, it is together with any one and three of the five aggregates of consciousness. Sometimes, it arises together with two of the five aggregates of consciousness, as well as four and non-existence. Sometimes, it arises together with the five aggregates of consciousness, as well as arising and entering together with up to seven. Thus it is said. What enters together with feeling is, again, it is said from that, the alaya consciousness sometimes enters mixed with feelings of pleasure, pain, and neither pain nor pleasure, because the feelings that arise dependent on the entering consciousness all arise dependent on it. Among these, in humans, desire realm gods, animals, and some hungry ghosts, the co-emergent feeling is not pleasure either.
