Yes. Among them, the first is the ripening of good and evil, causing suffering to the mind; the second is whether form is pleasing or not. There are also two kinds of proximate function: the proximate function to ripening and the proximate function to objects. As for the first, feeling itself is the proximate function; as for the second, only consciousness is the proximate function, so there is no fault. Or, the feelings of pleasure and pain are the clearly experienced proximate function, and the six consciousnesses that are similar to these feelings can also be called by the name of "companion," which is not contradictory. The reason for holding the proximate function as the meaning of the realm is also because, for the Vaiseṣika and other schools that advocate a permanent self, it is reasonable for the consciousnesses that are related to the meaning of the permanent self to proximately enjoy objects such as form. As for those Buddhists who advocate no-self and only acknowledge the five aggregates as dharma, it is to eliminate the doubt: upon what do these consciousnesses rely to exist, so as to proximately enjoy objects? The third question is about the number of sources: Why is it said that there are only twelve sources? Because they can be divided into internal and external sources, or into more kinds. Answer: Because as the place of the six consciousnesses that are the future proximate function, the six faculties of body, eyes, etc., which act as the door of production, do not need more, and less will not do; and as the object of these proximate functions, the objects of form, etc., which act as the door of opening their production, do not need more, and less will not do, so the internal and external sources are determined to be twelve. Considering that the past and present proximate functions have already been produced and do not need a door of production, that is why "future" was said. The parts of the six consciousnesses that open the door of production of the proximate function are included in the mind source. The parts of the mental factors and non-associated formations, as well as the form, etc., contained in the dharma source, that open the door of production of the proximate function are included in the dharma source, so it is determined to say that the body and the object are both. Similar in cognition, mental factors are also like consciousness.

Why are they not placed in the mind base (manāyatana)? Because they arise from the mind moment by moment, and there is no continuity of the later arising from the similar previous moment of their own kind, so they are unstable. They do not have the ability to give a place to other consciousnesses, and in order for other consciousnesses to give a place, they are established as the mind base. If these consciousnesses similarly arise from the four conditions, why are the bases of the adhipati-pratyaya (dominant condition) and the alambana-pratyaya (objective condition) established, but not the bases of the hetu-pratyaya (causal condition) and the samanantara-pratyaya (immediately preceding condition)? Because the places and objects of these consciousnesses are determined separately, the bases of the adhipati-pratyaya, the sense faculties, and the alambana-pratyaya, the objects, are established. However, the causal condition and the immediately preceding condition are not determined separately in the same way that the places and objects of these are determined, because all of these arise from one causal condition, the alaya-vijñana, and the immediately preceding condition arises from the similar consciousness preceding it. Although they are determined separately, those are collectively shown as the mind base. Therefore, the bases and dhatus of the causal condition and the immediately preceding condition of the consciousnesses are not established. If it is said, why are the alaya-vijñana, the klesha-manas, and the mental events that arise from the mind not established as bases from the aspect of being the door of arising? If it is said that because the six modes of engagement with objects are the door of arising, they are established as bases from the aspect of being the door of arising of the six consciousnesses, then if there is no self, what is this engagement with the six objects such as form? Such a question will arise, and in order to eliminate it, they are established as bases from the aspect of being the door of the six consciousnesses. In this way, according to the previously explained reasoning, only the six consciousnesses are suitable for engagement with objects, and it should be known that it is only through the six sense faculties as the place and the six objects as the object that the consciousness of engagement with objects arises, and in this way, one will realize the selflessness of engagement with objects. The so-called door of arising is merely that which has become a means of arising consciousness, and it is not the meaning of a causal agent of action, because it is not appropriate for one aspect of the dharma-dhatu, such as space, to closely combine with benefiting the result. Those are also the mental aspects that focus on themselves.
