"It is faulty, it is capable of being prevented, it is not non-existent." Thus it is said. Among other afflictions, craving is the most important, etc., because it is the main cause of taking birth. Why is craving the most important in the creation of karma? It is because the karma that propels birth is of three kinds: merit, non-merit, and unwavering karma. What is the nature of these will be explained below. Among these, non-merit propels one into the lower realms, while merit and unwavering karma propel one into the desire realm gods and humans, and the two upper realms respectively. Since beings are limited to these, the karma that propels birth is definitely these three. These three karmas are also created by the power of craving. Like this, because ignorance causes confusion about the self, craving naturally arises from wanting the self to be happy. At that time, due to craving for the happiness of this life, one creates non-meritorious karma; due to craving for the happiness of desirable qualities in the next life, one creates meritorious karma; and due to craving for the happiness of meditative absorption, one creates unwavering karma. If it is said that actions arise from the condition of ignorance, is ignorance not the main thing? Why is craving the main thing? Ignorance is the first cause of actions, so it is said that way. As it is said in the commentary Don gsal, "Extreme delight in the Blessed Mother is the main cause of obtaining all goodness." Therefore, ignorance is not the uncommon cause of all karmas like craving, because even a single ignorance included in the desire realm can be the cause of all three karmas. Unlike ignorance, craving from one realm cannot be the cause of all three karmas, because craving from the desire realm can only be the cause of meritorious and non-meritorious karma, while the craving for existence included in the upper realms can only be the cause of unwavering karma. Among the cravings of the desire realm, when craving for the pleasures of this life, one only creates non-meritorious karma, while craving for the desires of the next

Therefore, due to craving for sensual pleasures, one only accumulates meritorious actions. Therefore, craving, relying on ignorance, is the uncommon cause of actions, so it is the main one. Even without other afflictions such as hatred as a cause, it is possible to accumulate any action. Without craving as a cause, it is impossible to accumulate any action, therefore, relative to other afflictions, craving is the common cause of all actions, so it is more important than those others. Therefore, it is said that even when initially accumulating actions, craving is the main thing. Why is craving the main thing when taking rebirth? Because one clings to the happiness of the places of birth, such as the mother's womb, and due to the influence of craving that desires to obtain them, one connects with that particular place of birth. For example, some people do not take food, clothing, and other necessities at will without wanting to obtain them. Moreover, sentient beings are not led to the womb and so on involuntarily by Ishvara and others, but it is proven by reasoning that they voluntarily choose the places of birth such as the womb. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Because of having attachment to self, sentient beings are not led by others, but because of wanting to abandon suffering and obtain happiness, they completely accept inferior places." Furthermore, anyone who has craving for sensual pleasures at the time of death will undoubtedly connect with the desire realm, but it is not certain whether there is ignorance and karma of the desire realm. For example, for a non-returner who has a basis in the desire realm, even if there is ignorance and karma of that realm, he will not be born in the desire realm. It is not that the non-returner does not have ignorance of the desire realm, because it is said in the Thirty Verses: "Wherever one is born, that is the place." Therefore, the afflicted mind and so on in his continuum are of the desire realm. Moreover, it is not that he does not have karma of the desire realm, because even if there is no karma that matures after being born in the desire realm and maturing many times, for the one who has attained the path of seeing, there are many karmas that mature and do not necessarily mature. Similarly, at the time of death, if one has manifest craving for existence that focuses on the higher realms, then one connects with those higher realms, but it is not certain whether there is ignorance and karma of those realms.
