Although (views) differ, regarding the meaning of "mutable obstruction," some consider it only to be tangible obstructive matter, while others consider it only to be color that is mutable by touch. Therefore, it is said that "existing as color in two ways." Generally, the term "definition" is related to both agent and object, thus it can refer to both the agent and the object of action. As it is said, "By what mark is it known as a definition?" and "What essence does it mark?" etc. Like this, when combined with the agent, because this agent causes it to be marked, it is called "definition," just as a cook is called "cooking." The second is when combined with the object, because this marked object is called "definition," just as the rice being cooked is called "cooking." The first, as the definition of the nature of the agent, is a factor in generating understanding, therefore it is called the agent. The second, as the definition of the nature of the object, is only what is understood by the former, therefore it is the object. Furthermore, for the first, that which marks its own unique essence is the self-definition, and that which marks what is common with other dharmas is the general definition. The former needs to avoid the three faults of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility, while the latter does not consider over-pervasion to be a fault. For the first, there are also two definitions: the definition that does not confuse dissimilar types, used to eliminate non-pervasion, over-pervasion, etc., when the nature of that dharma is not understood as a factor of understanding; and the definition that eliminates inverted understanding, used to eliminate non-pervasion, etc., in consciousness when it is an antidote to doubt and inverted understanding of that dharma. For the former, no matter how the words are used, the meaning is primary; for the latter, not only must the meaning not be inverted, but the expression of words that can cut off inverted understanding and doubt is primary. The definition of the nature of the object, as well as what is marked and the basis, have the same meaning. Here, between the two, object and agent, the latter is primary. For the latter, there are also respective self and general definitions. And the definitions that do not confuse dissimilar types and eliminate inverted understanding are primarily the former. The two mutable obstructions are: that which, when in contact with colored matter, can produce a change different from before is color mutable by touch; although contact cannot produce change, that which, similar to other obstructive colors, can be inferred by consciousness to occupy space is color existing through analysis.

pa'o. Of these two, having either one can transform into form, and if neither is complete, it will not transform into form, because it lacks characteristics. For forms that are unmanifest and unobstructed, imputation, empowerment, and manifest occasions are suitable for transformation into form through analysis of the object, while non-revealing forms and particles are spoken of as forms through close imputation, or because their dependent origination is suitable for transformation into form, they are also said to be suitable for transformation into form. To explain these in detail, there are two ways: through touch and through detailed explanation of form suitable for transformation through object analysis. The first, in short, how does it become suitable for transformation into form? The sutra says that when gathered and touched by hand, if touched, it is suitable for transformation into form, and so on, thirteen statements are also quoted here. In short, it can be summarized into two types of form: those included as sentient beings and those included as non-sentient beings. If divided, it will also become various forms such as the gathering and touching of teeth and feet, so it is not certain for things just like that. Hands, hunger and thirst, bees, flesh flies, and scorpions are forms included as sentient beings, while others are non-sentient beings. When they gather and touch, they produce changes that are different from before, so they are suitable for transformation into form. For example, touching with a hand causes the color of a flower to fade, or being afflicted by hunger and thirst causes the body to become weak and emaciated. The second is, for the manifested object, what are the blue, yellow, white, red, etc. forms? What are the shapes such as long and short? It can be observed and analyzed. Through what object? Through the mind that is in meditative equipoise on the unattractive and liberation, etc., and the mind that is in accordance with conceptual thought. Through the mind that is not confused about the object clung to in conventional terms, and the minds that are in accordance with conceptual thought. How is it done? Clearly grasping and using colors and shapes, such as this is this color, this is this shape. Although dreams and illusory forms are distinguished by deluded consciousness in terms of color and shape, etc., they do not become excessively form because conventional consciousness does not grasp them in this way. Imputation and empowerment
