The answer is: Sense object, sense faculty, and consciousness, the three, gather as cause and effect, and that which has the characteristic of knowing and completely determining the characteristics of the name of the sense object is perception. A characteristic is that which, having been made a reason, becomes the cause for applying various names to phenomena and persons. For example, seeing certain shapes of clay, such as a bulging belly, one applies the name 'pot'; seeing certain characteristics of animals, such as flesh bulging on the neck and skin hanging on the throat, one applies the name 'cow'. If the characteristics such as a bulging belly and black color are not determined by the eye consciousness that apprehends the color of the pot and the cow, then how does perception apprehend them? It is not the case, because the characteristics such as a bulging belly are the distinctions of the object, while consciousness only determines the essence of the object, not the distinctions. Because if it were, it would be the same as mental factors, and it would lead to the fault of having no distinction. These reasons will be discussed in detail below. In short, these phenomena of affliction and purification each have their own unique characteristics that are different from others. Otherwise, everything would become one taste, which would lead to the inability to distinguish subtle differences. This unique self-characteristic is called a characteristic. Because by making it the reason, one can apply a unique name that distinguishes it from other things. If this characteristic is not completely determined by consciousness, then it is unreasonable to apply the name of its cause. And from the name, it can also be established that there is a consciousness that determines the characteristic of its cause. And that consciousness is called perception. If both feeling and perception arise from the gathering of sense object, sense faculty, and consciousness, then why is it said 'gathering' when explaining the nature of perception, but not for feeling? Perception is distinguished by apprehending characteristics, and characteristics are the nature of the sense object, and knowing it also depends on the gathering of sense object, sense faculty, and consciousness, so it is said 'gathering'. Feeling is distinguished by experiencing the ripening of karma, and the object to be experienced is the ripening of

Since maturation is also the nature of the experiencer itself, it is the dharma of grasping, not the dharma of the object, so it is not spoken of in that way. Explaining extensively from the aspect of function, it is rightly said to be the imputation of terms. If asked what it is like, it is like gods and humans are beings, and eyes and noses are dharmas. If asked what is done to what, it is seeing with the eyes, hearing with the ears, and even if not seen or heard, analyzing with wisdom, distinguishing this from that with thought-arisen wisdom, and understanding separately in the manner of self-awareness with meditation-arisen wisdom. If asked by what is it done, it is the complete cutting off of the characteristics of the object and grasping, which are the awareness of the retinue of sense consciousness and non-conceptual mind consciousness, and clearly grasping from the perspective of determining that this characteristic is this, which are the awareness of the retinue of conceptual mind consciousness. If it is not fully marked and not fully analyzed, is it not said that one does not speak? If so, how does the retinue of non-conceptual sense consciousness impute terms? The mind consciousness and its retinue enter the objects of sense consciousness such as form and sound, which is dependent on the manifestation of the sense consciousness that grasps those characteristics. Otherwise, if there is no dependence on sense consciousness, mind consciousness alone can understand the objects of form, sound, etc., because grasping those, sense consciousness becomes meaningless. Therefore, after the awareness of the retinue of sense consciousness completely cuts off the characteristics of the object, the retinue of mind consciousness then clearly grasps this as this, and then imputes terms, so there is no fault. Therefore, for the imputation of terms to the meanings of seeing, hearing, etc., which are the objects of sense consciousness, the awareness of the retinue of sense consciousness is primary, because it is the first cause of that term. For the meanings arising from the dharma realm, only the awareness of the retinue of mind consciousness imputes terms. If the objects of terms are limitless, why are only these four meanings of seeing, hearing, etc., shown as the objects of terms? It is true, but here it is not showing all the objects of terms, but mainly showing, among the terms, the correct and incorrect to be adopted and abandoned by those who desire liberation.
