Therefore, it merely becomes a method for generating knowledge. For example, just as an old man stands on the ground and tries to rise by relying on a cane, all forms of consciousness reside in their respective senses and arise by depending on an object. Third, in the aspect of showing the three dharmas as possessing appropriation (nyer len can), there are two parts. First, regarding the question of establishing the aggregates as aggregates of appropriation: In the sutra, it is said, "Monks, the aggregates that are made and the aggregates of appropriation should be explained." Then, why are they called "aggregates of appropriation"? The answer is: Because they are associated with the appropriations that will be explained below. Therefore, forms and so on that are tainted are called aggregates of appropriation, just as a cart with an ox is called an ox cart. The way of association is related to the six ways, such as the nature of appropriation and arising from the cause of appropriation. Just as arising from the cause of taint and so on are called tainted and bound. Some think that the wise spiritual friend is also associated with the object and correspondence of appropriation and explain it as the meaning of association, but this is not seen as reasonable. If that were the case, then here, whatever is tainted and bound would be wrongly established as tainted and bound merely by being associated with the object and correspondence of taint. Appropriation is considered by the Vaibhashikas and others to be the general term for all afflictions. The aggregates of appropriation are also considered to be like a fire of grass and straw, the internal aggregates arise from appropriation; or like the king's people, the external vessels depend on appropriation. Alternatively, both are like a tree of flowers and fruits, because they produce appropriation, they are called aggregates of appropriation. Although they think so, this treatise considers the desire to obtain and the attachment of not abandoning to be called appropriation. Why are these two called appropriation? Because desiring and accepting the aggregates of suffering is the meaning of appropriation, and this exists in both desire and attachment. In this way, desire, through generating the desire to obtain the aggregates of future rebirth, accomplishes it; and attachment, through being particularly attached to the aggregates of this present life, completely does not abandon it.

If there is also craving that looks at the past aggregates, why do you only take attachment to future and present aggregates? As for the craving that looks, it is only attachment to the past aggregates, but it is not taking them, because the past has ceased, and no one can accept it, and no one strives to obtain it. The future and present aggregates are not like that, because everyone is focused on engaging in taking and abandoning for the sake of the happiness of the aggregates of this life and the next. Therefore, attachment to the present and future aggregates takes the aggregate of suffering, but not craving for the past does not. If ignorance and other afflictions and meritorious deeds and other actions are also said to be the cause of suffering, why do you only explain that desire and attachment, which are characterized by craving, are the proximate cause of accomplishing suffering? Because craving is more important than karma and other afflictions in accomplishing the aggregate of suffering. As the sutra says: What is the noble truth of the origin of all suffering? It is craving, which is regenerative, accompanied by attachment to joy and delight, and is very delighted with this and that. The Commentary on Valid Cognition says: Although ignorance is the cause of existence, it is not mentioned, only craving is mentioned, because it is the promoter of continuity, and it is not the immediately following action. Its meaning is like this: In general, both karma and afflictions are the cause of suffering, but afflictions are the main ones, because if there are afflictions, then the previously accumulated karma can also accomplish life, and new karma that promotes life will also be accumulated; if there are no afflictions, then the accumulated karma, like a seed without moisture, cannot produce life, and new karma that promotes life will not be accumulated. As the Commentary on Valid Cognition says: Although karma and body exist, but one is missing, because it is a three-cause, life will not exist, like a sprout without a seed. Karma is not a fault,
