Thus, by teaching the five aggregates, the five views of self in the twenty extremes of the view of the perishable are reversed. When these are reversed, the views of what belongs to the self will also be reversed of their own accord. For if there is no self, there is no way to apply the term 'what belongs to the self' in relation to it. Therefore, here it is said that there are five bases of what belongs to the self, but it is not said that there are a self and a base of what belongs to the self. It is not the case that form and so on are not the basis of what belongs to the self, because form is apprehended as belonging to the self and so on. Those who explain that it is for the sake of stating the five bases of apprehending the self and what belongs to the self are not reasonable, because there is no need to show form and so on as the basis of what belongs to the self. If it is said that it is for the sake of reversing the apprehension of these as belonging to the self, it is not so, because it has already been said that by showing these as the basis of what belongs to the self, all views of self are reversed, and when that is reversed, all views of what belongs to the self are naturally reversed. If the view of self is not reversed, even if form and so on are shown as the basis of what belongs to the self, the apprehension of these as belonging to the self will not be reversed, because if there is an apprehension of self, the mind that apprehends what belongs to the self will arise of its own accord. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, 'Attachment to the self is certain, the object is on the inner limbs, attachment changes after its nature.' Furthermore, if there is a place to fabricate something other than form and so on, which is the object of the mind of what belongs to the self, then it would be reasonable to show these as the basis of what belongs to the self in order to reverse it. However, those who apprehend what belongs to the self, such as 'This form is mine,' and so on, only apprehend form and so on as belonging to the self, and they do not see apprehending anything other than these. If that is the case, then it is the same that there is no need to show these in order to reverse the apprehension of self in form and so on. It is not the same, because in this way, when apprehending form as belonging to the self, one apprehends 'This form is mine,' and similarly, when apprehending form as the self, one thinks 'This form is me,' and at that time, there is no need to show that the basis of the object of this apprehension of form as the self is form, because there is no confusion about this. However, it should be shown that 'This form is not the self.' Even so, for form

When clinging, there is no clinging like "this form is me", but when the eye etc. take form etc. as objects, they cling to "I see form, I hear sound" etc. At that time, the seen and heard forms, sounds, etc. are not me, but the senses such as the eye etc. within the aggregate of form, which is what needs to be pointed out. Secondly, regarding the question of the determination of the number of realms: Why is it said to be only eighteen realms? If summarized, it can also become the three realms of object, sense, and consciousness, and if the eye and ear etc. are divided into two, it will become many, why is that? Answer: The six consciousnesses that enjoy the six objects such as form etc., from the perspective of the place of holding, do not need more than the six senses such as body and eye, and it is not possible to have less, so it is determined to be the six sense realms. For these enjoyments, from the perspective of the object of holding, the six objects are completely held, and it cannot be more or less, so it is determined to be the six object realms. For holding the self-characteristics of these enjoyments, it is determined to be the six consciousness realms, so it is determined to be the eighteen realms. The past is what has already been held, and the present is what is being held, so the past and present are mentioned, and the future is not mentioned because there is no certainty of holding. Enjoyment refers to the six consciousnesses that enter here, because they enjoy the enjoyment of the six objects such as form etc. It is not the alaya consciousness and the afflicted mind, because they do not enjoy objects. If they also enjoy objects such as form etc., then the senses such as the eye etc. would become meaningless, and those who are without thought and in cessation samadhi would also become enjoyers of objects. The Madhyantavibhāga says: One is the alaya, the consciousness of dependent origination; the second is the six aggregates, which are the enjoyers; feeling is enjoyment, completely knowing and cutting off, and their practitioners, mind-born self and others. Since it is said that feeling is enjoyment, why is it said to be consciousness here? Generally speaking, enjoyment is divided into two types: the enjoyment of birth and the enjoyment of object.
