Feelings such as happiness are not in accordance with the self and the Dharma. Because it is through this that names are applied, name is perception. And that is the basis of the self, because when perception applies names to the meanings of seeing, hearing, and other forms of distinct consciousness, a delusion arises of a self that is the applier of such names. In order to show the basis of this delusion of self-grasping, the aggregate of perception is spoken of. When it is known that applying names to the meanings of seeing, hearing, etc., is perception, then the grasping of such a self is reversed, because perception and the self are not in accordance with the Dharma. The mental activities such as intention, which make the mind manifest towards Dharma and non-Dharma, are the basis of the self, because they impel the mind to engage in Dharma such as faith and non-Dharma such as attachment, and thus a delusion arises of a self that is the agent of Dharma and non-Dharma actions. In order to show the basis of this delusion of self-grasping, the aggregate of mental formations is spoken of. When it is known that the mental activities such as intention, which make the mind manifest towards objects of Dharma and non-Dharma, are mental formations, then the grasping of such a self is reversed, because mind and other things are not in accordance with the Dharma of the self. If one doubts, even if seeing, hearing, etc., and applying names, etc., are aggregates of form, etc., and not the self, but what is it that the senses such as the eye rely on to enjoy objects, and what is the basis for performing the application of names, etc., of perception, that very basis is the self? To dispel this doubt, the aggregate of consciousness is spoken of in order to firmly establish the places of the basis of the self that were previously explained. That is, when it is known that the one who enters into objects such as form through the door of the senses such as the eye, and the one who applies names to the meanings of seeing, hearing, etc., through the door of perception, are the consciousnesses such as mental consciousness, then the grasping of such a self is reversed, because the consciousnesses are not in accordance with the Dharma of the self. If the grasping of self is definitely limited to the five characteristics as previously described, then for the purpose of reversing them, it would be reasonable to definitely limit the five aggregates as the basis of delusion, but the view of self is not necessarily limited to just that. As it is said in the *Entering the Middle Way*: ‘The agent is permanent, single, and independent.’

“The self that is not an entity.” The speculation of non-virtuous tirthikas. Thus it is said. Also in the Compendium of Reality of the Middle Way: “The Vaiśeṣikas say that the support and the all-pervading eater.” Thus it is said. The Secret Sect says: “Earth, fire, water, and so on, that which knows is the constant agent, that is the nature of the possessor of self.” Thus it is said. The Vedānta says: “Consciousness is powerful and indestructible, likewise life also dwells in this self, space has no difference, likewise the self is also certain.” Thus it is said. The Practitioner says: “The other self, the self that is reversible, by the nature of the follower, it is considered to be the essence of mind.” Thus it is said. The Victorious One says: “Like the victorious measure, the Victorious One says, by the nature of substance and name, the nature of the person, the mind.” Thus it is said. Thus, the tirthikas have many different characteristics of the self, and there are also many who hold to a self that is in accordance with that, and also from the scriptures it is said, “There are twenty extremes of the view of the aggregates.” If you ask why, there is no fault in this, thus, all the different views of self that exist are all determined to be either holding the self to be the nature of matter or holding the self to be the nature of consciousness. Among them, all those who hold the self to be matter, as explained before, arise from the confusion of the senses such as the eye enjoying objects, therefore all of them will turn out to be contrary to the explanation of the form aggregate. All those who hold the self to be consciousness, all of them, from the basis of feeling and so on, enjoying the ripening of virtue and non-virtue, and so on, enter because they see that they are doing this and that action as explained before, therefore all of them will be prevented by the explanation of the aggregate of name and basis. That very thing, the teacher Steadfast Intelligence also said: “The Sāṃkhyas and others who hold the self to be consciousness, view the aggregate of name as the self and view the form aggregate as the self, the Vaiśeṣikas and others who hold the self to be matter, view the form aggregate as the self and view the other four aggregates as the self.” Also, there is no harm in explaining that there are twenty extremes of the view of the aggregates, because five views of self and fifteen views of self will be explained in this very place, and the five views of self are also objects of the five aggregates.
