The words "mas," etc., should be combined according to a common basis. If the word "dhātu" (khams) is understood as the source of sound, then the dhātu related to the eye is the eye-dhātu, etc., and should be combined into related terms. Third, regarding the basis for classifying the number of āyatanas (skye mched), it is the āyatanas themselves. The number of categories is twelve. The nature of the divisions is the eye-āyatana, ... up to the dharma-āyatana. The future eye-consciousness arises from its place of support, it is the gateway to arising, or it is the cause of the manifestation of eye-consciousness, therefore it is the eye-āyatana. Similarly, by opening the gateway to the object of use, or it is the cause of the accomplishment of the manifestation of form, therefore it is the form-āyatana. Likewise, the remaining ones should also be combined accordingly. Here too, the method of combining words should be understood as before. Here, the divisions of the three dharmas (phung po dang khams dang skye mched) are mentioned before their definitions, because they do not have a common definition that can be applied subsequently, and without making divisions, the definitions cannot be stated. Therefore, stating the divisions first is necessary for easily understanding the definitions of the three dharmas. Second, regarding the reasons for the fixed number, there are three points. First, the question regarding the fixed number of aggregates is: Why is it necessary to fix the number of aggregates at only five? It could be summarized into two aggregates, the form aggregate and the non-form aggregate, and if expanded, it could be divided into many, so why is that? The answer is: In general, the Tathāgata taught the aggregates, dhātus, and āyatanas to those to be tamed in order to counteract, in order, the clinging to a self as being singular, as a cause, and as an enjoyer. As it is said in the commentary: Why are the aggregates, etc., taught? It is in order to counteract the three types of clinging to a self, in order. The three types of clinging to a self are clinging to singularity, clinging to an enjoyer, and clinging to an agent. Clinging to singularity is the self-clinging that precedes, and it cannot be removed in the way that one removes external thorns, etc., but when removing the faults of the inner mind, it is removed by refuting the object of that mind's clinging. Because there is no object that exists in reality or that is fabricated, therefore the mind of that clinging

Because that is not allowed. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "The abandonment of desire, hatred, etc., which are related to qualities and faults, is because they are not seen in the objects, but because of the external forms." And: "If the objects are not refuted, it is not possible to abandon them." This is what is said. Therefore, it is necessary to refute the grasping of a self in the object by way of negating the self of the object. When negating the self, one might think: Just as in the world, illusions arise such as mistaking a conch shell for silver and a rope for a snake, all of which arise from seeing truth and falsehood as similar, and no illusion is seen to arise without any basis. If there is no self, then where does the view of self arise from? Therefore, it is necessary to show the basis for the illusion of self, and that is none other than the five aggregates, such as form. As it is said: "Whatever śrāmaṇa or brāhmaṇa truly observes a self or what belongs to a self, it is only in these five aggregates of appropriation." Therefore, in order to reverse the grasping of a self, the five aggregates are shown as the only basis for the illusion of self. Among them, the body, together with being completely grasped, is the basis of self, because when the body is completely grasped by the five faculties such as the eye, and enjoys the five objects such as form, attachment to a self such as a seer and a hearer arises. In order to express and clarify the basis of this illusion of self-grasping, the aggregate of form is shown. When it is known that the five faculties, such as seeing form and hearing sound, are merely engaging with the objects, then such grasping of a self is reversed, because the faculties such as the eye are incompatible with a self. By this, when enjoying the fruits of virtue and non-virtue, what is enjoyed is feeling, i.e., pleasure, pain, and indifference, and these are also the basis of self, because when enjoying the ripening of virtue and non-virtue through them, the illusion of a self that experiences the ripening arises. In order to show the basis of this illusion of self-grasping, the aggregate of feeling is spoken of. When it is known that the experiencer of the ripening of virtue and non-virtue is feeling, i.e., pleasure, pain, and indifference, then such grasping of a self is reversed.
