It is like saying, "I have not shown this to the children." Among them, what is the consciousness of taking, that is, the two parts of the nature of the fruit, the fully ripened, and the essence of the cause, the seed. The first part is profound, because the wise men of the world cannot speculate. The second part is subtle, because it is not a substance, so it cannot be said to be this or that, and it is difficult to examine. On the other hand, it is profound because it cannot become the direct perception of wisdom arising from hearing and thinking, and innate wisdom. It is also subtle because worldly meditators also cannot make it a direct perception. Or, it is profound because it is difficult for the wisdom of hearers, solitary realizers, and children to understand, and it is also subtle because the wisdom of bodhisattvas who are aspiring practitioners cannot understand. Thus, the profound and subtle consciousness of taking is endowed with all the seeds of all pervasively afflicted dharmas. For example, when a stream of water flows naturally, just as it goes along with the countless waves arising from the cause of the wind, the alaya consciousness, like a stream of water, arises without interruption for even a moment. It enters together with the entering consciousnesses, which are like water waves, therefore it is said to flow like a stream of water. This has not been taught to those of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages in the way that it is in its own nature, because it is not necessary to teach this to them, and if it is taught, it will become a fault. Why is it not necessary to teach? Because this is summarized by subtle knowable objects, and they also do not value understanding vast knowable objects. If it is taught, it will also become a fault, because taking the body and continuously entering, etc., are themselves in accordance with the self. If they think that there is a self, they will be far from attaining the fruit they desire, liberation. Why is the mind not called alaya consciousness or taking consciousness in the Hearer Vehicle? Because this is summarized by subtle knowable objects, like this understanding

The aspects of the two are twofold: gross and subtle. Among them, the subtle aspect, from the perspective of the general characteristic, is the selflessness of phenomena; from the perspective of its own characteristic, due to its difficulty to understand, it is the ālaya-vijñāna. The gross aspect, from the perspective of the general characteristic, is the selflessness of persons; from the perspective of its own characteristic, it is form and so on. Among them, the Śrāvakas, only through hearing and contemplating the gross aspects of the general and individual characteristics, can gradually realize them directly with the samādhi of the noble ones and the wisdom attained thereafter. Therefore, only the gross objects of knowledge are taught to them, not the subtle ones. Why? Because they are not primarily engaged in knowing the knowable, but primarily engaged in realizing nirvāṇa; and because their intelligence is unclear, they cannot understand the subtle objects of knowledge, but can only know the gross ones, and even with just that, they can achieve their own liberation. Bodhisattvas, however, engage in knowing all knowable things. If the ālaya-vijñāna is not taught, one cannot easily understand that this is the place of the knowable, that is, the nature of the knowable, its own nature, the three natures, and so on. If they have not understood these through hearing and contemplation, and have not cultivated them through meditation-born wisdom, it is not easy to attain omniscient wisdom. Therefore, the ālaya-vijñāna is taught only to them. The nomenclature of the Mahāyāna has been explained. Now, the nomenclature of the Śrāvakayāna will be explained. As it is said in a scripture spoken in one place, in the Sūtra of the Four Benefits of the Appearance of the Tathāgata: "If one teaches the Dharma to those who are universally delighted in the ālaya-vijñāna of all beings, who are delighted in the ālaya-vijñāna, who rightly arise in the ālaya-vijñāna, who are manifestly delighted in the ālaya-vijñāna, they will be eager to listen and lend their ears, focusing their minds on knowing everything, practicing the Dharma that accords with the Dharma. If the Tathāgata appears in the world, then this rare and wonderful Dharma will also appear in the world." Such words, also with this nomenclature, teach the ālaya-vijñāna, other than that.
