Because if one posits distinct entities, it is unreasonable to apply numbers like "two" to a single entity with distinct characteristics. A collection is designated as such when all causal and resultant conditions are gathered without any deficiency. Thus, these non-mentally associated formations should be understood as nominally existent, designated by the characteristics of phenomena based on their states. The aggregate of formations has been explained.\\ Next, intending to establish the aggregate of consciousness, it is stated, "What is the establishment of the aggregate of consciousness?" There are two aspects to this: a summary presentation of the categories and a detailed explanation of them. First, to present the categories, it is stated, "Whatever is mind and intellect is also consciousness." Consciousness is called consciousness because it distinctly cognizes each object. It is called mind because it is diverse. It is also called intellect because it serves as the basis for the immediately preceding mind. This is explained as a designation for the six entering consciousnesses, considering their types, under the condition of not establishing the ālaya and afflicted mind. However, in reality, they are not mind and intellect because they lack the meaning of those terms. For example, mind is named for its diversity or accumulation, and intellect is named for its constant thought of self. The entering consciousnesses, in each moment, focus on one specific object, so they cannot be called diverse. The five sense consciousnesses do not have the thought of self, and the mental consciousness does not always grasp at self, so they cannot be called intellect either. Therefore, in reality, mind is the ālaya-consciousness itself, because it is the basis for the ripening of all formations and is thus of the nature of diversity or accumulation. Intellect is solely the afflicted mind, because it is of the nature of constantly thinking of self.\\ To explain these categories in detail, first, the mind is explained. What is referred to as mind is the ālaya-consciousness that possesses all seeds. The reason for this is that it is the habit of those contaminated dharmas.

Because it is the nature of accumulating habits. The reason for this is that the Alaya itself has aggregates, realms, and sources. Virtuous, non-virtuous, and indeterminate phenomena can generate fruits that are consistent with themselves, and it is transformed into a habit with the ability to generate fruits, and it is repeatedly cultivated and nourished. What is called "all-seed Alaya consciousness" should be understood through five aspects: name, self-nature, establishing reasoning, classification, and appearance. There are also three types of names: those that are famous in the Mahayana that are not common, those that are famous only in the Hearer Vehicle, and those that are famous in both. In the first, in the Mahayana Sutra, mind, Alaya consciousness, ripening consciousness, taking consciousness, and the place of knowledge are all names. Why is Alaya consciousness itself called mind? Because when the Bhagavan said mind, intention, and consciousness, intention should refer to the afflicted mind, and consciousness should refer to the six entering consciousnesses. If you think so, then apart from Alaya consciousness, you cannot find the third body called mind. Alaya consciousness is the nature of accumulating habits, so it is reasonable to call it mind. Why is it called Alaya consciousness? Because sentient beings combine all pervasive defiled dharmas with it as the entity of the fruit, or it also combines with those dharmas as the entity of the cause, so it is called Alaya consciousness. Alternatively, all sentient beings constantly hold and combine the view of self that corresponds to the afflicted mind, so it is called Alaya consciousness. The first is explained in terms of the seed part of Alaya consciousness, because all pervasive defiled dharmas arise from the cause of the seed part of Alaya consciousness, and it is also the cause of all pervasive defiled dharmas. Pure dharmas are not combined with it as the entity of the fruit, nor are they combined with it as the entity of the cause of those dharmas, because they are inconsistent and antidotal.
