Because of that reason. Therefore, the object grasped by the discriminating mind that thinks, "This is the letter A," is not substantially existent. Following that mind, because the term "A" is applied to it in the world, it is also not merely imputed. Therefore, for all the sounds of "A," the label "This is the letter A" is attached by discrimination. Therefore, the basis of imputation here is the sound itself. Just as the nature of "A" is, so too should other vowels and consonants be understood. The collections of names and words are accepted in the same way as the systems established by previous logicians. Logicians believe that if something is not substantially existent, it cannot be a conditioned phenomenon or an object. Therefore, the nature of names and words is imputed. They cannot be conditioned phenomena or objects, and therefore they are not considered to be the aggregate of formation. However, Sautrāntikas believe that although these exist by imputation, there is no contradiction in establishing them as the aggregate of formation because they can be imputed as conditioned phenomena. This is the only difference. Furthermore, in the Collected Topics, the object to be known and expressed is summarized in its entirety as letters, moderately summarized as names, and extensively summarized as words. Relying solely on letters, only sounds can be individually recognized, and no meaning can be individually recognized. Relying on names, the nature of that particular phenomenon can be individually recognized, and sounds can also be individually recognized, but detailed classifications of many phenomena cannot be individually recognized. Relying on the collection of words, everything should be recognized, and this method should also be understood. Therefore, the way in which this treatise establishes the aggregation and non-aggregation of the three as the aggregate of formation is as described above. By relying on this establishment of the three, the nature of the treatise can be easily understood. A treatise explains the temporary and ultimate paths of acceptance and rejection, and this is established by relying on the above-mentioned collection of three characteristics. Furthermore, based on the previous view, slightly differentiating, that which clearly elucidates the actions of acceptance and rejection of a person is a treatise. This should also be clear.

are the nature of manifestation and the two that are the basis thereof. The former is further divided into the collection of names that merely reveal the essence, and the collection of words that reveal the distinctions. The basis of these is the collection of letters, because names and words are closely connected based on letters. Letters are not the actual manifestors, because letters are not indicators of meaning. This has already been established by scripture and reasoning. Here, when the collections of letters arise from the author's intention to express and the efforts of the tongue and palate, etc., in accordance with the order of the speaker's intention, then that itself, when heard by the listener in the order of hearing, is applied to the essence and distinctions of the meaning that is desired to be manifested, as names and words. From those collections of names and words that have been applied in this way, the meanings that the author of the treatise desires to manifest are also understood by the listeners as they are. Therefore, the collections of names and words that have the characteristic of a general sound, which appear in the minds of the listeners, are the actual treatise. The names and words that appear in the author's intention to express are the cause of the treatise, but not the actual treatise, because they do not clarify the meaning of the treatise to others, because they are related to the wisdom of the speaker and do not appear in the minds of others. There is no need to clarify to oneself, because those meanings have already been understood and are meaningless. Those collections of letters are also not the actual treatise, because they do not indicate the meaning of acceptance and rejection, as has already been said. If that is the case, how did the author create the names and words that are related to the listener's mind? Because the collections of letters composed by the author, through the power of hearing by the listener's hearing, those general sounds of the listener also arise, therefore it is said that those were also created by the author. For example, when suffering arises from the power of being struck by another, it is said that this suffering was created by another. If that is the case, then only the names and words related to the listener's continuum that the author himself hears become the treatise, while the speaker's continuum...
