How is it understood that this is not the case? If you ask, "Isn't it said that a short letter is completed in the time it takes to blink an eye?" That is to say that even a short letter has many moments, but it is not said that each moment is not a letter. For example, just as a small sound has many minute sound particles, it does not mean that each minute sound particle is not a sound. Therefore, even the thought that arises from a short letter like "A" produces its result, the sound of "A," which has many prior and subsequent moments, which is the power of the thing itself. Therefore, it is shown that each short letter has many moments, and that hearing also gradually obtains them. If speakers could utter only the first moment of the sound of the letter "A," unrelated to the later moments, that would not be the letter "A," because the place from which "A" arises, the action, effort, and intention to express, etc., have the same causes and conditions. The similarities and differences of the results are caused by the similarities and differences of the causes and conditions. Otherwise, nothing would become similar or different, because there would be no difference in the causes and conditions that make it so. If the first moment of the sound of "A" did not arise from the place and action of "A," etc., then the other moments would not arise either. Therefore, if there is no sound arising from the place and action of "A," etc., or if one follows those logicians, one would have to accept that letters such as "A" are not born from causes and conditions, but are of a permanent, self-arising nature. If one thinks that each moment is not a letter, but the letter "A" arises from its place and action, etc., because each moment is not "A," then is such an "A" one moment or many moments? If it is the first case, then the terms long and short for "A" would be unreasonable, because a single moment cannot be called long or short, etc. The second case is the view I have established, so I accept it.

There is no dispute about that. If one does not want to admit that a moment is the nature of one or many, then one must admit that letters are permanent or that they are non-existent. Therefore, the view that letters are the nature of sound is established. Why is it said that the collection of names and words is of a fabricated nature? Because when many letters are heard, the subsequent cognition regards those letters heard sequentially by hearing as merely the essence of things such as eyes and forms, and it connects them with characteristics such as permanence and impermanence, fabricating them as manifestations. Among the characteristics of letters, whatever cognition regards the essence of things such as eyes and forms as a manifestation, that is a name. Whatever letter regards the characteristics of things as a manifestation, that is a word. If that is the case, doesn't the letter itself become a name and a word? No, letters are merely the basis for being fabricated as names and words, but not the nature of names and words. Because letters cannot express and manifest the essence and characteristics of things. Just as something for which no conventional relationship has been established cannot manifest that thing, just as no convention of a horse has been established for something with black dirt, etc., the vowels and consonants have not established conventions for the essence and characteristics of things. Because for this thing, this is its name, whatever is not apparent to the cognition that establishes the convention, cannot establish a convention for anything, just as the characteristics of famous names in Sanskrit are not apparent to the cognition that establishes conventions for the people of Kang. Because vowels and consonants are objects of hearing, they are not apparent to the cognition that establishes conventions. Therefore, names and words are what manifest essence and characteristics, and cognition has established conventions for that thing, and therefore, it is the generality of sound held by cognition. In reality, they are not established in any internal or external thing, because internal and external things each have their own unmixed nature.
