That which is called "division" and "the continuum of conditioned things," thus it is established. This means that three sets of three words are spoken. The collection of names refers to words that clarify only the intrinsic nature of internal and external phenomena, without relating to the dharma, such as eyes, nose, and form. This is established as the collection of names. The collection of phrases refers to words that clarify the intrinsic nature of phenomena in relation to the characteristics of dharma, such as permanence and impermanence, happiness and unhappiness. For example, "all conditioned things are impermanent, all phenomena are without self." This is established as the collection of phrases. The collection of letters refers to the place from which both names and phrases arise, such as the clarifying letters like 'ka', and the vowel letters like 'a' and 'i'. These are established as the collection of letters. There are three definitive terms here: nature, function, necessity, and the corresponding definitive term. First, it is called a letter because it clarifies both name and phrase. Why does it clarify them? Because in the case of a collection of letters, it is by means of the expression that clarifies the nature and characteristics of phenomena that it is established as name and phrase. Second, the letter is also what expresses, because it accurately expresses the meaning of nature and characteristics. That is, the names and phrases that clarify the nature and characteristics of phenomena are the case of many letters gathered together. Third, these letters, combined of vowels and consonants, if one does not understand the sound of each expression, because they belong to the synonyms of names, they will not be understood as other meanings. For example, the letter 'a' refers only to the sound of saying 'a', and there is no other synonym that can be understood as the letter 'a'. If one says "the first of the vowels," would it not be understood? No, that only understands the order of expression, but does not understand the sound of 'a', and the letter also depends on the case of sound. Everything is just nature, difference, and both are merely nominal.

All of these are named by these three, therefore the collections of names, words, and letters are distinguished. Because these collections of names, etc., are difficult to understand, they should be examined a little. Among them, one should understand the two different views of logic and scripture, namely, the Lord of Reasoning considers the collection of letters to be the nature of sound's own character, while the collection of names and words is the general characteristic of sound that is imputed by conceptual thought. In reality, it is not established in either inner consciousness or outer objects, so it is not real, and therefore it is considered not to be included in any of the five aggregates such as form. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: 'Letters arise from intentional consciousness, and the sound of consciousness arises. Its distinction is determined by the ear. Possessing the consciousness produced by consciousness, hearing it, there is fast and slow.' etc. 'Letters are also heard simultaneously.' And it says: 'One cannot grasp long, etc.' etc., because the sutras say that letters are the object of hearing. Again, in the same text, it says: 'Words, etc., are all imputed and unreal, how can the connection of reality exist?' etc., because the sutras say that names and words are imputed. Among them, a letter is produced from one place, effort, and intention, and has the nature of many moments of the enemy's sound. Even a single short letter must be completed in the time it takes for a person to open or close their eyes, and many moments have passed during that time. As it is said: 'The nature of a letter, all boundaries, also exists in the blink of an eye. It is also gradually perfected by the connection of many particles.' Therefore, even a single short letter is gradually understood through hearing, but not simultaneously. As it is said: 'Wisdom is also momentary, therefore, letters are gradually understood.' Therefore, if this is the case, each moment of a letter is not a letter, and it is impossible for these successive moments to gather simultaneously, therefore, some say that a letter is only imputed and not real. Are each moment of a letter a letter?
