Because the abiding nature itself is not to be apprehended by conceptual thought. Therefore, the collections of names and sentences are of a fabricated nature, and in reality, they do not exist; this view is established. Thus, each individual letter cannot even serve as the basis for the fabrication of names and sentences, so conceptual thought does not cling to them as expressing meaning. Therefore, letters become meaningless. This shows that letters themselves do not express meaning. When many letters are heard in an auditory and comprehensible sequence, conceptual thought fabricates them as revealing the essence and characteristics of things. Therefore, speech is not separate from letters, because it is not observed (that speech exists independently of letters). This shows that there is no speech that expresses meaning apart from letters. Here, letters are the attributes of things, so they arise sequentially from their respective causes, which are sequential motivations, and according to the order in which they arise, they are also apprehended by their respective objects. As for names and sentences, because they do not exist in things, there is no sequence of arising from causes and conditions. However, because they are the emanations of the mind, conceptual thought apprehends them simultaneously as a single entity. If names and sentences do not arise from causes and conditions, then how can the statement "names arise from letters, and sentences arise from names" be valid? The meaning is this: when some special combinations of letters are heard, people fabricate them as names that reveal the essence of certain things, therefore, people say "names arise from the combination of letters." When many special combinations of letters that can be fabricated as revealing the essence of things are heard, people fabricate them as sentences that reveal the characteristics of things, therefore, people say "sentences arise from the combination of names." Thus, the distinction of these three collections that arise from the treatises of reasoning is like this. Next, the way of distinguishing the three collections that arise from the Abhidharma will be shown. Among them, the Abhidharma scholars of the Vaibhashika school believe that these three collections, such as letters, are non-associated compositional factors that are not different substantial entities from form, mind, and mental factors among the five aggregates of form, sensation, perception, formation, and consciousness. Among them, a letter is, when the auditory consciousness hears the tones of the sound called "A,"

After that, the thought arises, "It is A." When such a thought becomes the object to be grasped, it is neither consciousness, nor an external object, nor the nature of superimposition, but is considered to be the letter called "A." The other vowels and consonants are also considered to be the same. The so-called "name" refers to when some differences of the letters with characteristics just mentioned are gathered together, it only clarifies the essence of things, such as the consciousness that produces names like "eye, form." And the object grasped by that consciousness is neither inside nor outside, but is substantially established, and is called the "collection of names." The so-called "sentence" refers to when many differences of the names just mentioned are gathered together, the sentence consciousness that clarifies the differences of things such as permanence and impermanence arises, and the thing that is grasped by that consciousness, whatever is substantially established, and is not the meaning of inside and outside, is called the "collection of sentences." In this way, letters arise from the sound of speech, names arise from letters, and sentences arise from names, which is the order. The Sautrāntikas who follow the sutras of the Great and Small Vehicles consider these three collections to be neither the nature of form, mind, and mental factors, but non-associated formations. However, they do not consider it to be substantially established like the Vaibhāṣikas, nor do they consider that sound is a self-characteristic or a superimposition, and the nature of things does not exist, like the logicians. So what is it? It is the verbal expression, temporarily established, the correct basis of establishment, which is neither the same nor different from it, but can be conceptually established, and is taken by consciousness separately from its own nature in conventional terms. Among them, the so-called letter refers to when the tones of the sound called "A" are heard in the order of auditory consciousness, and then it is held by thought as "It is A." And the object grasped by this thought of "This is the letter A" is not the tones of the sound heard by auditory consciousness, because when this thought arises, those tones have ceased. It is not the thought itself, because it is contradictory for oneself to act on oneself. It is also not a different, substantially established dharma, because no valid cognition has perceived any fruit or essence of such existence.
