That is what he (referring to what was said before) said. If one possesses this, then all afflictions and near afflictions will arise, and they are not far away. Therefore, this is the basis for the arising of all afflictions and near afflictions, having such a function. The harm that is the basis of intolerance is that one harms oneself, therefore there is no loving-kindness; causing others to harm, therefore there is no compassion; seeing harm and generating joy, therefore there is no joy, is it like that? Or are these meanings the same, therefore the former is explained by the former, and the latter by the latter. This, towards sentient beings, does various harms such as killing, binding, burning, and sinning, therefore it is the basis of various harms, having such a function. The cause of the decline of higher discipline is the two, shamelessness and lack of embarrassment. Shamelessness is, even though knowing that the action is not something one should do, one does not restrain oneself from evil deeds, being the opposite of knowing shame. Lack of embarrassment is, even though knowing that if one does that action, it will cause a bad reputation in the world, one does not care about others, does not look at others' faces, and does not restrain oneself, being the opposite of having embarrassment. How are these two established as the nature of the three poisons that are the cause of all evil deeds? Because attachment and hatred cannot arise simultaneously. If one possesses these, then all afflictions and near afflictions will be universally practiced, therefore, these two are the companions of all of them, having such a function. The cause of the decline of higher mind and higher wisdom also has three: the door of the decline of the nature of calm abiding, the door of the decline of the nature of special insight, and the door of the decline of the nature of equanimity. The first is the two, dullness and sleep. The second is agitation and regret. The third is the remaining parts from lack of faith to behavior. If explaining these in order, dullness is the unclear awareness of the object, which makes the mind sluggish and unable to be used for virtuous deeds, this is because it is established as belonging to a part of ignorance. This is of afflictions and near afflictions.
