Therefore, I would necessarily become a state without obscuration, because I am fundamentally separated from the aggregates that bind one to samsara. So, regarding what is said about the twenty views of the aggregates arising from fixating on the five aggregates of appropriation, how many of these are views of self, and how many are views of what belongs to self? The twenty views range from the view that form is self to the view that consciousness is where self resides. Among these, the five from the view that form is self to the view that consciousness is self are views of self. The remaining fifteen are views of what belongs to self. Why are the fifteen views of what belongs to self? From the view that I possess form to the view that I possess consciousness is the view of what belongs to self, because, like a man and his ornaments, the five aggregates are related to the self as its characteristics. The five from the view that form is mine to the view that consciousness is mine are also views of what belongs to self, because, like a man and his wealth, the five aggregates are regarded as being under the self's control. The five from the view that self resides in form to the view that self resides in consciousness are also views of what belongs to self, because, like the essence of butter pervading milk or a lion dwelling in a mountain cave, the self is not regarded as being in a different location from the parts of the body, but as pervading them. Why are there said to be twenty views of the aggregates? Because all existing views of self are limited to these twenty. Why? Because all existing views of self exist in relation to these aggregates, and some people consider the self to be identical with the aggregates, while others consider the self to be separate from the aggregates. Those who consider them to be identical are limited to the five from the view that form is self to the view that consciousness is self, because no other basis for considering something to be self is found. Those who consider the self to be a separate entity also exist in two ways: either the aggregates depend on the self, or the self depends on the aggregates, and no other way is possible, because there is no self that does not possess aggregates.
