are the kinds of... Others say: the first are the Samkhya, the second are the Vaisheshika, the third are the Naked Ascetics, and the fourth are the views of the Pudgalavada. Although they say so, I don't think it's reasonable. Because the third and fourth, only the words are different, but there is no difference in meaning, because it is said in the Yogacarabhumi Sutra, it is too much to be the same as the views of the Sravaka Pudgalavada and the Sarvastivadins. And the last two views will also become the views of those two people. All these fourteen views will become the questions asked by the heretical sages based on their own views, which is too much. Furthermore, among the sixty-two views, what is the difference between speculating on whether the world has an end or not, and speculating on whether the unrecorded has an end or not? Regarding this, the former is merely the meditator relying on the direct perception he has obtained, to speculate on the time of the previous end of the external vessel world, and the end of the region. The latter is merely the speculator relying on other sounds, to speculate on the future end of both self and world. Furthermore, the former is based on meditation-born, and has a definite form; the latter is based on hearing and thinking, and has an uncertain form. In order to abandon all these forms of views, the Tathagata completely abandoned the extremes of permanence and annihilation, and based on the profound dependent origination, turned the wheel of Dharma. As it is said in the Root Verses of the Middle Way: With great compassion holding, in order to abandon all views, proclaiming the supreme Dharma, Gautama, I prostrate to you. Thus it is said. What faults did the Bhagavan see, so in the sutra it is said: One should not truly see form, etc., up to consciousness as self. One should not truly see that the self is in form, etc., or form, etc., is in the self, or the self is other than form, etc., or the self is without form, etc. Why is it that he refutes the aggregates, elements, and sources, and clarifies the self in five ways? Because of the five faults of grasping form, etc., as self, etc., and grasping with the view of the collection of destructibles.

Having observed, the self is made clear in relation to the aggregates and so forth. What are those five faults? They are the fault of contradicting the characteristics, and so on. If there is a self, is it with the aggregates, or is it of a nature without aggregates? If it is according to the first case, is that self of the nature of the aggregates, or is it other than the aggregates? The first alternative is unreasonable, because the characteristics of the self and the aggregates are contradictory. That is, those who speak of the self assert that the self is of the nature of permanence and oneness, while the aggregates are perceived by valid cognition to be of the nature of impermanence and multiplicity. Also, things with contradictory characteristics are contradictory in being the same entity. If it is according to the second alternative, does the self abide on the aggregates as a support, or do the aggregates abide on the self as a support? If it is according to the first case, the self will become impermanent, because it relies on the impermanent aggregates. If the support is impermanent, then those who rely on it are also seen as impermanent, just as when a vessel shakes, the water shakes, and when a wall collapses, the drawings that rely on it also perish. If you say that the aggregates are to be controlled by the self, so the aggregates rely on the self, but the self does not rely on them, even then, the self will not be an independent one that can control the aggregates as it pleases, because even though the self does not want it, the aggregates will change to other states, and will perish, and so on. Whoever controls something follows the wishes of that thing, just like the body of a dancer and the monkey of a monkey handler. The aggregates do not follow the wishes of the self, therefore the self is not the controller of the aggregates. If the self is of a nature without aggregates, then what is called the self will be just a name, and there will be no body or nature at all, because for one who is not associated with the aggregates, there is no body that has become a nature, just like the son of a barren woman. Furthermore, as long as the self is bound by the aggregates, that is samsara, and when it is liberated from the bonds of the aggregates, then the self is liberation, this is what those who speak of the self assert.
