They are those that have an end, those that do not have an end, those that are both, and those that are neither. The four that rely on Nirvana are: After the Tathagata passes away, does he appear? Does he not appear? Is it both? Is it neither? These are they. What the body is, that is also the life. And, the body is other, and the life is other. These two rely on the body and the life. Why are these called views that are not prophesied? Because when some people asked the Tathagata about these, he knew that they were asking about the self, and if he prophesied whether it had an end or did not have an end, etc., he thought that it was inappropriate to examine the Dharma of difference without a basis, and if the basis was negated, he thought that it would not be meaningful, so he did not say anything, therefore it is called not prophesied. As it says in the Jewel Garland: When asked, 'Does the world have an end?' The Victorious One remained silent. Because such a profound Dharma is not spoken to beings who are not vessels. Therefore, the wise know that the All-Knowing One knows all. That is what was said. Now this should be examined: Like this, what is the difference between the sixty-two views and the fourteen views that are not prophesied? What shows the difference? To this, before the Tathagata turned the Wheel of Dharma in Jambudvipa, all those non-Buddhists who were different from this Dharma, how many kinds of views did they have that clung to the extremes of permanence and annihilation, all those are only the sixty-two views mentioned before. In short, the sixty-two views are distinctly established. When the Tathagata turned the Wheel of Dharma, some non-Buddhist ascetics asked the Bhagavan, summarizing the meaning of the sixty-two views into fourteen extremes, these are the fourteen views that are not prophesied. Thus, if these views are analyzed extensively, they will become the sixty-two views, and if they are briefly summarized, they will become the fourteen views that are not prophesied. If they are summarized very briefly, they are the two views of permanence and annihilation, or clinging to the view of extremes.
