Regarding the four negations, if questions are asked concerning the paths of higher rebirth, which are virtuous and non-virtuous, and the definitive paths of suffering, origin, cessation, and path, they vow, "I will abandon gods and humans." Regarding those questions that should not be abandoned, that is, questions based on the cause of attaining the state of deathless, pure gods, they evade the questions with other words or avoid them in a manner that conforms to refutation. Among these, the first refutation is because they fear lying and ignorance, so they dare not clearly answer, "I do not know." The second refutation is because they fear that their realization will be refuted and examined, and they also fear lying and wrong views, so they dare not clearly answer, "I am a conceited person with realization." The third refutation is because they fear refutation and examination, lying and wrong views, so they dare not clearly answer, "I am not certain." They do not answer clearly, but instead ask the other person and agree with their views, thereby avoiding the questions with words. They think to themselves, if the refuters come, I will prepare to respond there, and it should be recognized that this is the view here. There are forty-four views of clinging to the later extreme, namely: those who assert that there is perception have sixteen, those who assert that there is no perception have eight, those who assert that there is neither perception nor non-perception have eight, those who assert annihilation have seven, and those who assert liberation in this life have five. Among these, the sixteen views of those who assert that there is perception are: I have form perception, I do not have form perception, I have both form and non-form perception, I have neither form nor non-form perception, these four; I have boundaries, I do not have boundaries, I have both boundaries and non-boundaries, I have neither boundaries nor non-boundaries perception, these four; I am happy, I am suffering, I am both happy and suffering, I have neither happy nor suffering perception, these four; I am one, I am diverse, I am small, I have infinite perception.

These are the views that hold to having perception. The eight views of those who assert non-perception are: from "I have form and am without perception" to "I have boundaries and do not have boundaries, neither both nor neither, and am without perception," these eight. The eight of those who assert neither are: the eight that add "neither having perception nor not having perception" to the previous eight. The seven of those who assert annihilation are: humans and gods of the desire realm, as well as those of the form realm and the four formless abodes, these seven. Before dying, they are accompanied by illness and suffering, accompanied by pain, and after death, they assert complete annihilation. The five of those who assert liberation in this very life are: liberation through indulging in the qualities of desire without restraint, and the view that liberation is attained by achieving the four dhyanas. These mostly belong to the future, therefore they are views that contemplate the later extreme. A brief summary of these is: sixteen of those who assert having perception, eight each of those who assert non-perception and neither, seven of those who assert annihilation, and five who view liberation in this very life. Where do these five converge? If considered in terms of their own nature, they are extracted and established from the holding to extremes and wrong views. If considered in terms of cause, effect, and complete nature, they are established separately from all five views. This is because the view of the aggregates of fear is the cause of all of them, and the two holding to the supreme are their results. If one wants to know which of the five views the fourteen views spoken of regarding things not explicitly stated in the scriptures belong to, then from the perspective of characteristics, they are extracted and established from the holding to extremes and wrong views; if from the perspective of their retinue, then it should be known that they are extracted and established from all five views. What are these fourteen views not explicitly stated in the scriptures? As stated in the Root Verses of the Middle Way: "Views of past, future, and extremes, and views of permanence, etc., rely on nirvana and the later extreme, and arise from the former extreme." That is, the four views that rely on the former extreme are: I and the world are permanent, impermanent, both permanent and impermanent, neither permanent nor impermanent. Those that rely on the later extreme are: I and the world
