If so, it would be impossible for ordinary beings born in the upper realms to be reborn in the lower realms immediately after dying from those places. This is because the ripening of non-virtuous actions accumulated in other previous lives is uprooted by meditative absorption; and because no new actions that would cause rebirth in the lower realms are accumulated in that life. But isn't it said in the scriptures that karmic obscurations are purified by dharani mantras, confession of sins, and so on, which are said to be antidotes to karmic obscurations? Answer: Those also only make the power of the seeds of karmic obscurations smaller, and are intended only to delay the maturation of the result in that way, but not to uproot the seeds. Because, even for the meditative stabilizations of concentration and the formless realms, which cause one to be born in a state of peaceful bliss that lasts for many great eons, according to the reasoning explained earlier, there is no power to uproot the ripening of karmic obscurations, how can one expect such power from virtuous actions belonging to the desire realm, such as physical and verbal actions, reciting mantras, confessing sins, prostrating and circumambulating, and so on? In this way, the powerful forces of virtuous and non-virtuous actions are considered to destroy each other's power and delay the maturation of results. Therefore, the Teacher, considering that disciples should engage in or avoid those powerful virtuous and non-virtuous actions, said that anger towards a Bodhisattva destroys the virtue of a thousand eons, and that reciting special dharani mantras eliminates obscurations, and so on. As long as one has not attained the path that transcends the world, the ripening of the virtuous or non-virtuous actions that have been done and accumulated will not be wasted. Therefore, the Buddha said, 'I declare that the ripening of the actions that have been done and accumulated will not be unexperienced.' As it is said in the scriptures: The actions of sentient beings, Even after hundreds of eons, will not be lost; When the causes and conditions come together, and the time is ripe, They will surely ripen into their fruit. The inherent nature of past virtue is also not destroyed by wrong views, because the past has already arisen, and what has arisen cannot be destroyed by an antidote, because things are inactive in an instant. Therefore, it is also said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: The desire to arise is to be destroyed.

Because of the absence. Whatever prevents faults, By it, the potential of the generated karma changes, How the done becomes impaired. Thus it is said. In this way, wrong view does not destroy the nature of past virtuous roots, nor does it destroy the ripening, but it does weaken the power and prolong the ripening, this is established. Why is it that future virtuous roots obtained by birth do not have seed nature, and those arising from effort do not have autonomy? It is said: For those who do not have wrong views, the future virtuous roots obtained by birth remain in a state where they can arise spontaneously without any effort. The future virtues arising from effort remain in a state where they can arise if effort is made by conditions. Therefore, those virtuous roots of those persons are said to have seed and autonomy respectively. When the aforementioned wrong view arises in the mindstream of a person, as long as the power of that view's activity has not diminished in the mindstream, those virtuous roots arising from birth and effort are not even likely to arise in that mindstream, because the person who has that kind of view is very much in opposition to all aspects of virtue. Therefore, it is established that those virtuous roots of that person do not have seed and do not have autonomy. Thus, I have understood the meaning of wrong view cutting off virtuous roots in this way. Having thus shown the nature of the views, the difference of their basis is examined. Among these five views, how many are the views of superimposition that cling to the non-existent as existent? How many are the views of defamation that accuse the existent of being destroyed? The first four are views of superimposition, the first two respectively cling to the nature of self and self-belonging in the five aggregates of knowable grasping, because they superimpose on the difference of permanence or annihilation. The latter two respectively cling to inferior views as superior, and to evil views as prior.
