Because it arises from holding views as supreme, therefore it holds views as supreme. This, because of attachment to the "I" view as supreme, etc., is the action that serves as the basis for manifest attachment to evil views. Holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme refers to moral discipline and asceticism that are preceded by evil views, and to the acceptance of the five aggregates that correspond to these. It involves contemplating that "this moral discipline and asceticism will purify the stains of sin, liberate from the bonds of affliction, and definitely release from samsara," and so forth, along with acceptance and the like. Among these, moral discipline is the nature of abandoning immoral discipline. Asceticism is the definite sign of one's own bodily and verbal actions. For example, the sons of the Shakya hold the banner of saffron robes and other implements of a renunciate. The wanderers hold water pots, Brahma cords, munja grass, and animal hides, and so forth. If one considers moral discipline and asceticism to bring about purification and liberation, etc., then how should one think about the aggregates? If one is attached to moral discipline and asceticism as the correct path to liberation, such as purifying sins, then one will also be manifestly attached to the aggregates that correspond to these moral disciplines and asceticisms as the entity to be purified and liberated by them. No matter how much one strives with moral discipline and asceticism associated with evil views, one can only attain the state of higher realms. It is impossible to achieve true benefit through purification and liberation, etc., because they do not harm the attachment to "I," which is the cause of samsara. Therefore, this is the action that serves as the basis for fruitless labor, as it strives for moral discipline and asceticism for the sake of liberation, but does not produce the desired result. If these moral disciplines and asceticisms also produce the fruit of heavenly realms, then how can it be said that the effort put into them is fruitless? These moral disciplines and asceticisms are not practiced with effort solely for the sake of heavenly realms. If the result of these were merely heavenly realms, then who would violate the moral discipline that contradicts the happiness of the already attained heavenly realm?
