If asked, what is non-afflictive knowable? Because even Arhats who have abandoned all afflictions have this knowable. If asked, why is it called ignorance? Because this ignorance obscures the seeing of the reality of phenomena. Regarding the nature of afflictive ignorance, great ones have two views, as follows: The venerable Chandrakirti and Dharmakirti, following the Sutra of Ten Grounds and the Sutra of Moon Lamp, etc., consider the view of the perishable collection, which is characterized by grasping the aggregates as self and belonging to self, to be afflictive ignorance. As it is said in the Entering the Middle Way: "All afflictions and faults arise from the view of the perishable collection. Knowing this as the object of the self, the yogi prevents the self." Also, as it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "All faults arise from the view of the perishable collection. That ignorance, that attachment to it, from that arises anger and so on. Therefore, it is said that ignorance is the cause of all faults." And "All faults have that as their root, and that is the view of the perishable collection." etc., are explained with proofs. The Dharma Abhidharma of the Great and Small Vehicles considers the view of the perishable to be wisdom, because it has the characteristic of distinguishing and measuring things, therefore its object and aspect are clear. But ignorance is unclear, therefore they are different mental factors, not the same. This is their view. In this treatise, it is established in accordance with these views. Afflictive ignorance can also be divided into two: ignorance of cause and effect, and ignorance of the ultimate meaning. The first is not knowing the relationship of cause and effect. The second is not knowing the suchness of the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths. The first obscures the state of higher rebirth, and the second obscures the state of definite goodness. Or, there are two types of ignorance: unmixed ignorance and mixed ignorance. If one is ignorant, one will have inverted superimpositions on reality, generate dualistic thoughts, and generate all afflictions such as desire.

Those individuals also arise from not understanding the true nature of things. Therefore, ignorance is the cause of wrong views and doubts regarding the skandhas and other phenomena, and it is the basis for the arising of all afflictions. Fourth, the pride that arises from competing and showing off is when, based on the cause of the view of the aggregates as a self, one feels satisfied and arrogant with one's own lineage, knowledge, power, and other qualities. Although its nature is not different from contentment, pride becomes sevenfold due to the difference in the causes of contentment. This pride causes one to be haughty towards the lama and those with qualities similar to the lama, not serving them with body and speech, being disrespectful, and consequently looking down on others, leading to misconduct of body and speech. Therefore, it is also a karma that serves as the basis for the arising of suffering in samsara. As it is said in the "Bodhicharyavatara": "Pride leads to bad migrations, destroys the joys of humans, and becomes a slave who eats leftovers, or a foolish and ugly person." Sixth, the doubt that does not lead to practice or renunciation is the wavering of mind regarding whether the truth, the law of karma, and the Three Jewels exist or are correct. This doubt is also divided into two types: afflicted and non-afflicted. Non-afflicted doubt is when one is indecisive about any kind of action, such as wondering whether there are gods in this place or not. These are included in the obscurations of knowledge and are therefore not called afflictions. Afflicted doubt has the characteristics described above. It hinders the attainment of heaven and liberation, and is therefore a great fault and an affliction. That is, doubting the law of karma and the Three Jewels hinders the attainment of heaven, while doubting the various aspects of the truth hinders the attainment of liberation. If one doubts the law of karma and the truth, one will not engage in accepting and rejecting them, or in proper mental engagement, for the sake of attaining heaven and liberation. Therefore, doubt hinders the virtuous aspects that are the means to attain heaven and liberation.
