It is not as its substance. If one possesses it, one will not be hindered by killing, binding, etc., and will not harm others. Therefore, this is an action that does not cause hindrance. Since afflictions arise in due course after virtuous deeds, that is why it is said, "What is desire?" Moreover, in the "Collection of Determinations," it says: Where do afflictions exist? It is said: There are six places, namely, objects that are accompanied by ignorance and are pleasing and completely defiled, objects that are accompanied by ignorance and are displeasing and completely defiled, objects that are accompanied by improper attention and are completely defiled, one's own aggregates of clinging that are accompanied by ignorance, and beings that are inferior, equal, and superior, and the perverted view towards what is to be attained but not yet attained, and the perverted view towards qualities, and listening to non-virtuous teachings accompanied by ignorance and improper attention, and listening to non-virtuous teachings accompanied by ignorance and improper attention, and laziness. Among these, the first is because of the obvious joy in encountering. The second is because of the obvious joy in separating. The third is because of the perversion of the object. The fourth is because of competing and generating obvious pride. The fifth is because of obviously clinging to and practicing wrong teachings. The sixth is because of not practicing and not turning back, one should know that it is a place. As it is said, the afflictions that arise from the six places are also six. Among these, the first place, that is, the desire that arises from obviously liking to encounter, refers to those who, with respect to the bodies and enjoyments of the three realms, are attached and cling to them, making them difficult to separate. Just as grains, butter, and other oils enter places like cotton cloth, it is difficult to remove them even with effort. Similarly, desire also enters and pervades its own object, and even with great effort, it is difficult to separate from that object. Therefore, it is said to be attached. Because it possesses the nature of three kinds of suffering, the aggregates of the three realms are suffering. And that suffering is also accomplished by the power of desire, form, and formless craving.

Therefore, attachment is the karma that serves as the basis for generating suffering. Second, anger arising from the joy of separation is: the state of mind that is always annoyed and intends to harm unpleasant sentient beings, suffering, and the dharmas that are the source of suffering. If one is always annoyed, unpleasantness will inevitably arise, causing the mind to suffer. Because the body follows the mind, it will also suffer, and therefore one cannot abide in comfort. Moreover, one who is filled with anger is not far from any wrongdoing, therefore anger is the karma that serves as the basis for engaging in misdeeds. Third, ignorance arising from the perversion of objects is: not knowing or understanding the karma and results, truths, and the Three Jewels, etc., of the beings of the three realms. This is ignorance. So, is this ignorance merely the absence of knowledge? Or is it something other than knowledge? It is not merely the absence of knowledge, because that would imply that ignorance does not exist. Nor is it something other than knowledge, because that would imply that form and so on would also become ignorance. Therefore, ignorance is that which is contrary to knowledge and wisdom. It is also divided into two types, afflicted and non-afflicted. The first is an obstacle to attaining liberation. The second is an obstacle to attaining omniscience. The first is the root of all afflictive obscurations. The second is the root of all cognitive obscurations. The first is abandoned by realizing the selflessness of persons. The second is abandoned by realizing the selflessness of phenomena. The first is not an obscuration for the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, because it obstructs their desired goal of Nirvana. The second is an obscuration for the Mahayanists, because it obstructs their desired goal of omniscience. Therefore, whatever appears as phenomena such as grasping and the grasped, all of these are called non-afflicted ignorance. Why?
