What is its nature? Absence of delusion is the antidote to delusion, realizing things correctly and without error. It is twofold, distinguished by wisdom and individual investigation. Wisdom is fourfold, distinguished by the wisdom arising from maturation, from scripture, from thought, and from realization. These are, in order: innate wisdom, wisdom arising from hearing, wisdom arising from thinking, and wisdom arising from meditation. Individual investigation is simply wisdom that is stable. Stability refers to wisdom, diligence, and samadhi. Since it is impossible for wisdom to possess two substances simultaneously, individual investigation here refers to wisdom that possesses both samadhi and diligence. Diligence is the mind's delight in accomplishing virtue, serving as an antidote to laziness. What kind of virtue does the mind delight in? First, there is the armor characterized by the desire to accomplish virtue, and then, like putting on armor, there is the application of engaging in virtue. The mind is not daunted or intimidated by the vastness of what is to be accomplished, is not shaken by the harm of opposing factors, does not turn back from the application, and is not content with a small amount of virtue. The delight that arises in these objects is, in order, the diligence of armor, application, non-intimidation, non-reversal, and non-contentment. These are explained following the sutra phrases: "having power in virtuous dharmas, having diligence, having joy, being steadfast in conduct, firm, not abandoning effort." In accordance with this, the Ornament of the Sutras also says: "First is the armor diligence, then the proper entry into the application diligence, not daunted, not disturbed, not knowing contentment, is diligence." If diligence were merely said to be delight in activity, it would be unacceptable if delight in non-virtuous activity were also considered diligence. Therefore, the mind arises in objects such as armor.

It is specifically called "joy." Joy in non-virtue is to be condemned, as it is laziness, not virtue. If one asks, why is it necessary to have joy for those with afflictions, since they are so accustomed to them? Although that is mostly the case, there is also a slight dependence on joy. To make it complete is like entering the main practice. To fully accomplish it is to have thoroughly trained in it. The extreme pliancy that is simultaneously present at the time of detachment from worldly desire is: the unwieldiness of the body, the body being unfit for work; and the unwieldiness of the mind: that which, in any way, makes the mind unfit to be used for virtuous objects such as samadhi, and becomes the cause of severing the seeds of all defiled dharmas. What are those? They are the pliancy of body and mind. Among these, the pliancy of body is that the activities of the body, such as rising, lightness, etc., can be used as desired. The pliancy of mind is that the mind can be used for any desired virtuous object. For these, respectively, they are also called extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind. Is the pliancy of body and mind, which has the characteristics as described above, not the body and mind themselves? How can they be mind-born? Extreme pliancy is so called because it makes the body and mind pliable, and it is called pliancy of body and mind, but it is not the nature of pliancy of body and mind. Therefore, in dependence on what does the mind-born phenomenon of pliancy of body and mind, which has the characteristics as described above, arise? Here, extreme pliancy is taught as that. Because it makes the mind usable for the object as desired, it has the function of eliminating all obscurations such as afflictions. Among the mindfulness and equanimity that are simultaneously present at the time of detachment from the world, mindfulness refers to starting from non-attachment, abiding in diligence, and practicing through repeatedly manifesting virtuous dharmas with and without outflows.

Guarding the mind against defiled dharmas, afflictions and near afflictions, and the objects that give rise to and accord with them, and not letting the mind be lax, is mindfulness. Therefore, abandoning unwholesome things with diligence and non-attachment, and cultivating their antidotes, therefore, these are called mindfulness. Worldly perfections, such as excellent body and enjoyment, and transcendent perfections, such as the three types of enlightenment, are accomplished and perfected by diligence and non-attachment, etc. Therefore, mindfulness is that which perfects all worldly and transcendent perfections, and has the function of accomplishing them. Equanimity is that which initially makes the mind equal by eliminating the inequality of sinking and excitement, thus making the mind equal; and in the middle, without manifest effort, by means of entering the object of its own accord, makes the mind abide in its natural state; and finally, because there is no need to strive for the antidote to sinking and excitement, it makes the mind abide in a spontaneously accomplished state. In this case, when the mind is in a state of natural abiding, because it has not been long since meditation, there is a need for sinking and excitement to arise; and when the mind is in a state of spontaneously accomplished abiding, because the meditation is excellent and the opposing factors have become distant, there is no fear of sinking and excitement arising, and therefore there is no need to strive for their antidotes. The equality of mind and so on is the meaning of the mind abiding in equanimity, and that which arises from the mind, that which makes the mind abide in equanimity, is called equanimity. When the mind abides in the equanimity described above, there is no opportunity for afflictions such as attachment to arise, therefore, equanimity is the basis for not opening the opportunity for all afflictions, and has the function of accomplishing this. Non-harming, which is equally present at the time of benefiting sentient beings, is the very mind of compassion that arises when one sees the difference in the suffering of others and cannot bear it. That also belongs to the category of non-anger, and is established by it.
