It is the mind that desires to possess and pursue such and such things, such as looking at (things). By showing that there is no desire for the initial object and no desire for the intermediate object, it shows that desire is directed towards a specific object. Its function is to serve as the basis for diligent effort, because one strives to practice what one desires. The nature of conviction is: for things that are determined to be impermanent and suffering, etc., through reason and credible teachings, and for things that are without doubt, as they are determined, to establish that this is so and not otherwise, and to settle the mind in that very form. This is the nature of being unseizable, and the reason why it is called conviction is that it cannot be seized from one's own tenets by other opponents, and it cannot be led to other aspects. By "for certain things" it is stated that the object is certain, because it does not exist for uncertain and hesitant things. The nature of mindfulness is: through familiarity, that is, focusing on things previously experienced, in the form of the mind not forgetting, repeatedly remembering in the mind the things previously grasped. Here, "familiar things" indicates that the object is certain, because it does not exist for unfamiliar things. If one repeatedly remembers and thinks about things previously experienced, then there is no opportunity for the mind to be distracted to other objects, therefore, it is the nature of non-distraction. The nature of samadhi is: focusing on things that should be examined as having qualities and having faults, and making the mind one-pointed by continuously settling the mind on that very thing. Among them, the things to be examined are those who take the realization of the Four Noble Truths, etc., as a priority, and what should be examined for the sake of higher rebirth and definite goodness. Among them, the truth of cessation and the truth of the path have qualities by examining the forms of peace, etc., and definite departure, etc., while the truth of suffering and the truth of origin should be examined as having faults by examining the forms of impermanence, etc., and cause, origin, etc.

Similarly, the higher grounds are peaceful, and the lower ones are of a coarse nature. Virtuous actions should be accepted, and non-virtuous ones should be abandoned, and so on, should be known accordingly. If the mind is placed in equanimity, then this is the function of being the support of wisdom, in order to fully know things as they truly are. The nature of wisdom is: focusing on the object to be examined itself, the phenomena that appear in the mind, such as the characteristics of self and generality, are distinguished and discerned without being mixed up, either correctly or incorrectly. It has three aspects: that which is produced by reason, that which is not produced by reason, and that which is different from these. Among these, that which is produced by the three aspects of reliable testimony, subsequent inference, and direct perception is called wisdom produced by reason. It also has three aspects, namely, the wisdom arising from hearing, the wisdom arising from thinking, and the wisdom arising from meditation. These are also, in order, the wisdom arising from obtaining reliable testimony, the wisdom arising from examining and analyzing with one's own reason, and the wisdom arising from the power of meditating on correct samadhi. That which is produced not by reason is that which arises from unreliable testimony, seemingly correct inference, and wrongly conceived samadhi. These are also, in order, the wisdom arising from the hearing and thinking of the outsiders, the wisdom produced by their bad logic, and the wisdom that, through the power of meditating on contemplation, distinguishes self and the world as permanent and impermanent, and so on. That which is neither of the two is the wisdom obtained by birth and the wisdom of knowing the ways of the world. This is the function of averting doubt, because wisdom thoroughly distinguishes phenomena and thus reaches a single certainty. By saying "the object to be examined," it is shown that both samadhi and wisdom must have a definite object, because these cannot be applied to objects that are not to be examined. After determining the object, it is necessary to explain the virtues, therefore it is said, "What is faith?"
