If one wants to observe whether one possesses it, the answer is that at the time of certainty, it is possessed in accordance with faith. At the time of turning away from all afflictions, it is having a sense of shame and embarrassment based on oneself and others. At the time of engaging in the work of the virtuous side, it is non-attachment, non-hatred, non-ignorance, and diligence. At the time of being free from worldly desire, it is extreme gentleness. At the time of being free from transcendental desire, it is mindfulness and equanimity. At the time of benefiting sentient beings, it is non-harming, because it is embraced by compassion. Following what has been said above, these will be summarized and taught in six categories. Among them, for the moment, the faith that is possessed in accordance at the time of certainty has three forms: the form of completely believing in existing things, whether they have qualities or not; the form of having joy in existing things that have qualities; and the faith that has the form of desiring to generate or obtain existing things that have qualities. Among them, what is the faith of believing in existing things? It is the complete belief that the result of meritorious deeds and other virtues is desirable, and the result of non-virtuous deeds is undesirable, and that one should know suffering and abandon its origin. What is the faith of joy in things that have qualities? It is the joy represented by the shuddering of hair or the shedding of tears from the eyes, etc., through remembering the qualities of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. This is like a water-clarifying jewel that removes the turbidity of water. It removes the turbidity of afflictions and near-afflictions from the mind with which it is associated, and therefore it is called the faith of joy. The faith of desiring in abilities is the desire to obtain cessation, which has the characteristic of the cessation of all suffering, and the belief that one can generate the cause of cessation, the path. If that is the case, since it is a form of desire, wouldn't it become a desire of craving? No, because craving is defiled by the inverted pervasive activity.

It is not the same to focus on the objects that are in accordance with the arising of afflictions and to focus on the objects that are in accordance with generating pure faith. Since desire precedes faith, it will not become desire either. This is the function of serving as a basis for desire, because one strives for what one believes in. When turning away from all afflictions, the two that are equally present are self-respect and conscientiousness. For the time being, self-respect is: taking oneself or the Dharma as a reason, one refrains from misdeeds of body and speech, feels ashamed, shrinks back, and fears. That is self-respect. Among these, taking oneself as a reason is: How could someone like me, who possesses qualities such as lineage, knowledge, and discipline, commit such sins? Thinking that it is not appropriate to do so. Taking the Dharma as a reason is: Unpleasant results will arise, and engaging in harming others is even worse than not following the Dharma. Thinking that one will be afraid of this, that is taking the Dharma as a reason. Conscientiousness is: Such bad actions of body and speech are condemned even in the world. Therefore, if others find out that I have done such a thing, I will be scolded. Thus, taking others as a reason, one feels ashamed and afraid of bad actions. Both of these cause one to turn away from the proximate cause of misconduct, and therefore have the function of serving as a basis for restraining misconduct. Among the four that are equally present when entering virtue, such as non-attachment, non-attachment is the antidote to attachment to the body of existence and the necessities related to it, such as food and clothing. It is non-attachment, which is to be disgusted with these things and not accept them. Attachment is the cause of misconduct, and non-attachment is the antidote to it. Therefore, non-attachment has the function of not entering into misconduct. The following two can also be explained in the same way. Non-anger is: not being tormented by enemies and other unpleasant beings, the suffering felt by oneself, and all the dharmas that are the source of suffering, such as poison and weapons, is loving-kindness.
