When it occurs, in the retinue of the obscured and unspecified, desire, mindfulness, and conviction can arise for those who have determined objects. Having seen a pleasing form, desire arises to seek that object, and having seen something similar to a form previously seen, mindfulness arises, thinking, "This is the one from before." Also, having seen some forms where imputation has been severed, conviction arises again, affirming it as such. The wisdom that distinguishes the individual characteristics of objects such as forms can also arise, but the absorption of meditative concentration does not occur because it looks inward. The five sense consciousnesses do not occur because their nature is distraction. It is also possible for only one-pointedness of desire to arise. From other changes, investigation and regret can arise. Sleep does not occur because it enters by looking inward, and therefore does not focus on external objects. Know that virtuous and afflicted states do not occur in any way. Those that arise in the retinue of the obscured and unspecified should also be known to arise in the retinues of virtue and affliction. In the retinue of virtuous sense consciousness, all except for extreme familiarity and equanimity can arise. This is because it is possible to focus on objects such as forms. Why do extreme familiarity and equanimity not arise? Because they enter by looking inward through the practice of meditative concentration, and therefore do not focus on external objects such as forms. In the retinue of afflicted sense consciousnesses, among the six afflictions such as desire, views, pride, and doubt do not arise in any way, because they do not focus on objects such as forms, and therefore do not follow sense consciousness. That is, the view of the aggregates, the view of extremes, and pride look inward because they focus on the self. The view of holding views as supreme focuses on those views. The view of holding vows and asceticism as supreme holds that one is liberated from defilements by vows and asceticism, and therefore focuses on the purifying vows and asceticism, and the self to be purified.

Because of ignorance, wrong views, doubt, and aiming at truths, karmic results, deities, etc., which are not appropriate in the realm of the senses. The other three afflictions, such as desire, because they individually enter into objects such as form, etc., will arise in cyclic existence, while the parts of the path of seeing that wrongly enter into the truth will never arise. Also, for the near afflictions, know that those related to the three poisons that enter into objects will arise, while others will not. The retinue of consciousness is also of two types: definite and indefinite. The first is the five omnipresent [mental factors], because they arise at all times. The second is the remainder, because they arise occasionally. Consciousness also has three types like the sense consciousness: namely, in the retinue of the obscured-unspecified, the five omnipresent [mental factors], the five object-determinants, and the variable ones will arise. In the retinue of virtue, virtuous qualities such as faith will arise. In the retinue of afflictions, afflictions and near afflictions will arise. Thus, in the *Yogācārabhūmi*, from the perspective of the companions of consciousness, as it is said: What are the companions? They are, for example, attention and contact, and from there, discursive thought and analysis, and mental factors that are in accordance with such aspects, arising together and being concordant, are called companions. This is said from the perspective of concordance of understanding, not merely arising together. Therefore, it has been shown that in the retinue of consciousness, all mental factors arise as appropriate. So, in which realm and how many of those mental factors exist? In the desire realm, all exist in the way of universally arising, but in the way of being included by the ground, it should be considered whether or not concentration and perfect pliancy have characteristics. Others also exist in the way of being included by the ground. Above the first dhyana, hatred and near afflictions related to hatred, such as anger, also in the way of universally arising
