It is because of this. If asked, how is it that it belongs to the aspect of distinguishing and measuring, etc.? The answer is: that is understood by properly examining the self-nature of each. If examined one by one, it would be extensive, so I will not elaborate. If only a brief indication is given, then, without recognition of the desired object, there will be no recollection of it. Without certainty that 'this is it,' there will be no aspiration. Without distinguishing the previously experienced object, there will be no recollection of the speech about it. Without distinguishing faults and virtues, there will be no samadhi and wisdom focused on the object to be examined, which has faults and virtues. Therefore, it can be determined that the certainty about each object belongs to the aspect of distinguishing and measuring. Virtues such as faith also belong to the aspect of certainty, because they are the antidote to inverted consciousnesses such as lack of faith. If asked: If these faiths, etc., are not completely certain about the wrong path by the way of holding onto non-faith, etc., then, since these and those ways of holding are not contradictory, what contradiction is there in arising simultaneously in one continuum? Even if they arise simultaneously with afflictions such as non-faith, etc., then how are faiths, etc., established as virtues? Therefore, virtues such as faith also belong to the aspect of certainty. Afflictions such as desire and near afflictions, if they do not distinguish, measure, and determine the opposite side of the way of holding onto their own antidote, then how can they become obstacles to the arising of their own antidote? Furthermore, afflictions and near afflictions, because they act perversely on the various aspects of objects, views, and truths, therefore, these also belong to the aspect of distinguishing and measuring. If that is the case, then how do the five aggregates of consciousness become corresponding good and non-good? Because they do not correspond to good and non-good mental factors. The answer is: It is said that root consciousnesses become good and afflicted, not because of the correspondence of similar recognition, but because of the correspondence of similar arising together.

Thus it is. The corresponding that accords with understanding is said to be the five kinds of correspondence as mentioned before, which correspond with the mind. The co-emergent corresponding is, in general, the aggregates, realms, and sources of one continuum, whose nature of arising, ceasing, and abiding are the same. However, with regard to mind and mental factors, it refers to the mind and mental factors of one continuum that enter into one object of focus at the same time. Those mental factors that cause the sense consciousnesses to be virtuous or afflicted also arise in the retinue of the mental consciousness. That mental consciousness also has two aspects: seeking and determining. The first is entering into the aspect of seeking "what is this?", and the second is entering into the aspect of determining "this is it." Virtuous and afflicted mental factors arise in the retinue of the second mental consciousness. The two, virtuous and afflicted, arise from the two causes of conceptualization and previous karma. Among them, the mental consciousness is transformed into virtuous and non-virtuous by both causes, but in the five aggregates of consciousness, it is transformed only by the power of the karma of the mental consciousness, not by conceptualization, because they have no conceptualization. Thus, in the Yogācārabhūmi, it is also said: "The two, affliction and virtuous dharma, arise from the two causes, conceptualization and previous karma. Among them, the mental consciousness arises from both causes, while the five aggregates of consciousness arise only from previous karma. Immediately by the karma of the afflicted and virtuous mental consciousness, affliction and virtuous dharma arise in the consciousnesses of the eye, etc., but not by conceptualization, because they have no conceptualization. Therefore, the consciousnesses of the eye, etc., are called those that follow the mental consciousness." Thus it is said. If so, how do the sense consciousnesses become virtuous or afflicted by the karma of the mental consciousness? In that, at first,
