Why is that? Because this (volitional aggregates) precedes other volitional aggregates. For example, whatever consciousness, for the sake of virtuous dharmas such as faith, also makes consciousness appear and focus on the object; for the sake of all afflictions such as desire, it also makes consciousness waver and focus on the object; for volitional aggregates that do not have state differences, it also makes consciousness waver and focus on the object. If the reason is like that, then what makes consciousness appear in the object? It is this consciousness (intention). For what purpose does consciousness appear? Apart from feeling and perception, other virtuous and all afflicted mental events that arise from consciousness, and what is the state difference of consciousness appearing? It is the dharmas included in the non-associated volitional aggregates, which are called volitional aggregates. If you ask why feeling and perception are not included in the volitional aggregates? Because the aggregates have been well explained. If you ask why they are established as aggregates, etc.? Because feeling is the experiencer of the maturation of karmic results, and perception is the one who applies names to things seen and heard, etc., so it is the basis for grasping at self. In detail, there are two types: associated volitional aggregates and non-associated volitional aggregates. The first is also briefly indicated from the perspective of names: what are those mental events that belong to the volitional aggregates? From intention to the ultimate of wisdom. These are in the "Thirty Verses": "Pervasive and specific objects, mental virtues and these, afflictions and near afflictions." Thus, they are divided into six

If it does not even change with movement, what need is there to mention holding an object? Therefore, mind is all-pervasive. Without attention, the mind will not enter into the determination of its own object, because it is the function of attention to make the mind focus on the determined object. Therefore, attention is all-pervasive. Without contact, the three, object, faculty, and consciousness, will not gather, because the gathering of the three is also inseparable from contact. Therefore, contact is also all-pervasive. Without feeling, there is no experience, and without experience, there is no term for knowing the object, and not knowing the object cannot be in the mind, therefore, feeling is also all-pervasive. Without conception, one will not know the non-common characteristics of the object, and without knowing it, one cannot say that one knows such an object, therefore, conception is all-pervasive. Desire, memory, conviction, samadhi, and wisdom are called determination of individual objects, because these only engage with specific objects and do not engage with all objects. For example, desire only engages with the object of desire, therefore it is determined. Memory only engages with what has been previously experienced, therefore it is determined in relation to the object. Conviction only engages with what has been freed from superimposition and determined, therefore it is determined in relation to the object. The eleven from faith to non-harming are virtuous, because they are by nature faultless and are of the nature of what can be done. Alternatively, it is also explained that they are antidotes to lack of faith and so on, and are in accordance with the root of virtue. The six from attachment to view are called afflictions, because they afflict the mind. The twenty from anger to distraction are called near afflictions, because they bring the mind near to affliction. Here, what is the difference between afflictions and near afflictions? Afflictions are those that, individually, bring the mind close to affliction through many doors, while near afflictions are those that bring the mind close to affliction through any one kind of door.

Yes, but not from multiple avenues. That is to say, afflictions such as hatred, even with just one, can cause the mind to be closely afflicted through multiple avenues such as anger and holding grudges. Desire can also cause the mind to be closely afflicted through multiple avenues such as stinginess and arrogance. Near afflictions, like anger, also cause the mind to be closely afflicted only through the same manner, and not through other manners. Similarly, other near afflictions also only cause the mind to be closely afflicted through their respective manners. Thus, afflictions are general because they are universally present in all situations where near afflictions, based on their respective parts, cause the mind to be closely afflicted. And near afflictions are specific because they do not follow situations other than their respective situations. The four, such as sleep, are called "other-induced" because they transform into the three—virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral—due to the power of friends. Thus, mind-born phenomena are summarized into these fifty-one. The differences in mind-born phenomena taught in other sutras and treatises are only differences in name; if their characteristics are examined, none are not included in these. Considering this, these fifty-one are established as the treatise. If these are called "associated formations," why are they called "associated"? Because they are associated with the mind in five aspects. What are the five aspects? The same basis, object, aspect, time, and substance. The sense faculty that the mind relies on is the same one that its attendant mind-born phenomena rely on, therefore it is called the same basis. The object that the mind focuses on is the same one that its attendant mind-born phenomena also focus on, therefore it is called the same object. The manner of the mind is the same as the manner of the mind-born phenomena, therefore it is called the same aspect. The nature of the mind and its mind-born phenomena in terms of arising, abiding, and ceasing is the same, therefore it is called the same time. One mind with mind-born phenomena as attendants
