The phenomena that arise are also born of the same kind, not many, therefore they are called having the same nature. In this way, isn't the mind also similar to the phenomena arising from the mind, and the five aspects as previously mentioned? Why is it said that the phenomena arising from the mind are the same as the mind in the five aspects, so they are called following the mind, but the mind is not said to follow the phenomena arising from the mind? Answer: Minds each have their own definite basis. For example, eye consciousness relies on the eye sense faculty, and similarly, mind consciousness relies on the mind sense faculty, and so on. In this way, mental factors do not have their own definite basis, because even one mental factor can rely on all the sense faculties due to the power of conditions. Thus, consciousnesses each have a definite basis, and therefore rely on their own unique basis, having an independent basis. But mental factors are not like that, they do not have an independent basis. Therefore, minds rely on their own place, but do not rely on the place of mental factors, so in terms of basis, they do not follow mental factors. But mental factors rely on the place of the mind in whose retinue they arise, so in terms of having the same basis, they are also called following the mind. Similarly, consciousnesses each have a definite object, and therefore focus on an independent object, not on the object of mental factors, while mental factors do not have a definite object, and do not have an independent object. Therefore, they focus on the same object that the mind focuses on, so in terms of having the same object, they also follow the mind. Consciousnesses each have a definite object, and therefore their aspects are also definite. But mental factors do not have a definite object, so their aspects are not entirely definite. Therefore, they follow the aspect of the mind, but the mind does not follow the aspect of mental factors. It is said this way because of the similarity of aspects, otherwise mental factors would not follow the aspect of the mind.

Even if it is blocked, there is no fault, because in the *Yogācārabhūmi* and other places, it is also said that mind and mental factors, with respect to one object, can completely block many different aspects. Various consciousnesses only produce their own kind in one continuum, so their nature is definite. But mental factors are not like that, because when many different kinds of consciousness arise simultaneously, in the retinue of these consciousnesses, many mental factors such as feeling also arise. Therefore, mental factors, by virtue of the certainty of time and substance, also follow the mind. In this way, mental factors follow the mind through five aspects such as having the same basis, but minds do not follow mental factors. This should be understood. Now it should be examined which mental factors arise in the retinue of which consciousness. Among them, how many mental factors arise in the retinue of the eight aggregates of consciousness, the ālaya consciousness and the afflicted mind, will be explained when determining these consciousnesses themselves. Therefore, now examine which mental factors arise in the retinue of the six consciousnesses. Among them, there are two kinds of mental factors that arise in the retinue of the five aggregates of consciousness: the corresponding that takes in accordance, and the corresponding that arises simultaneously. Among them, in the corresponding mental factors that take in accordance of the sense consciousnesses, there are only the five omnipresent ones such as attention, and there are no others. This is what I have realized from scriptural authority and reasoning. Among them, first is scriptural authority, in the *Yogācārabhūmi*, when explaining the companions of the five sense consciousnesses, it says: "What are the companions? They are the mental factors that arise simultaneously with it and are corresponding, namely, attention, contact, feeling, conception, and intention." Because it is said like this. The reasoning is like this: the nature of the sense consciousnesses is non-discriminating, while the remaining mental factors such as determining the object, virtue, affliction, and near affliction, mostly discriminate and measure, the definite aspect
