That is, in this way, based on the aggregation of the eye faculty, from the feeling arising from contact to the feeling arising from contact of the mind faculty, it is easy to understand. Classifying by object, from "correctly knowing objects with characteristics in any way" to "also correctly knowing the realm of nothingness," will be explained. Explaining it itself, what is the nature of what is called "perception with characteristics"? Here, there are three characteristics: the characteristic of terminology, the characteristic of elaboration, and the characteristic of the appearance of objects. The first characteristic, perception with characteristics, refers to the perception of those who are proficient in the terminology of the connection between name and meaning, except for the perception of those who are not proficient in the terminology of the connection between name and meaning, because they clearly grasp things through names. The second characteristic, perception with characteristics, refers to perceptions other than those that do not have the characteristic of elaboration such as form and abide in the realm of reality, because they completely cut off the characteristics of compounded phenomena such as form. The third characteristic, perception with characteristics, refers to all perceptions other than those that abide in the peak of existence, because they completely cut off the object and appearance. There are also three perceptions without characteristics that are separate from these three characteristics. Among them, the perception without the characteristic of terminology is the perception of children and others who are not proficient in the terminology of the connection between name and meaning, except for the perception with the characteristic of terminology, because when they see things such as form, they have a cognition of the thing, but they cannot clearly express the thing through names, such as "this is form." The perception without the characteristic of elaboration is the perception that abides in the realm of reality, except for the perception with the characteristic of elaboration, because it is based on cessation that is separate from all elaboration, thus cutting off the characteristic of elaboration. The perception without the characteristic of clear appearance of objects is the perception of the peak of existence, except for the perception with the characteristic of clear appearance of objects.

These are the perceptions that abide in equanimity. Because they cannot clearly utilize the aspects of the object. Thus, these formless perceptions are not completely devoid of characteristics, because that would make them not perceptions. Therefore, a slightly diminished characteristic is called formless, just as a woman without children is called "so-and-so's mother." Small perception is the perception that completely knows the desire realm, because the desire realm is bad due to having many afflictions and short lifespan, etc. Great perception is the perception that knows the form realm, because compared to the desire realm, it has a long lifespan and fewer afflictions, etc., so it is superior. Immeasurable perception is the perception that knows the sphere of infinite space and the sphere of infinite consciousness, because it completely determines that the aspects of the object are immeasurable. The perception of nothingness is the perception that knows the sphere of nothingness, because it completely determines that there is nothing to be grasped. These objects, such as the desire realm, should also be understood as referring to the perception of one's own realm. For minds and mental factors other than perception, as previously stated, having characteristics and not having characteristics, and the characteristics of the desire realm, etc., are only known by perception, because perception can completely eliminate characteristics and differentiate. Therefore, only perception is distinguished as having characteristics, etc., and not others. After the aggregate of perception, in order to determine the aggregate of formations, the question is asked: What is the nature of the aggregate of formations? This is divided into two parts: a summary and a detailed explanation. First, the summary is the six thoughts, that is, the thought arising from eye contact, etc. Are all mental factors other than feeling and perception, and non-associated formations, not also the aggregate of formations? Why is thought itself mainly mentioned when explaining the aggregate of formations? Because thought is more important than others. Why?
