It distinguishes the earth faculty (དབང་པོ་,indriya, root) from other faculties because other faculties do not have the power to serve as the basis for eye consciousness. The term "associated with form" signifies the nature of the faculty itself. Here, the meaning of "associated" is, for example, when an image appears in water or a mirror based on form, it is said to be associated with it. Similarly, based on objects such as form and sound, the consciousness of the faculty, such as the eye, arises in the corresponding faculty gate, so they are called associated. The other faculties, such as the ear, should also be explained in a similar manner, which is easy to understand. The other four faculties, such as the eye, are limited by their basis, so they only exist where their basis is located and do not pervade the entire body. The body faculty, on the other hand, pervades all forms from the toes to the crown of the head, which are the source of sensation, consisting of the four elements and the forms derived from the four elements. Here, in the view of the Mind-Only school, the faculties such as the eye and the objects such as form are divided into two types due to the difference between the completely imputed and the other-powered. Among them, here and in the Yogacara school, the faculties are said to be corporeal, which is in terms of the completely imputed. This is also explained to introduce the mundane, following the conventions of the world. When it is explained that these are not truly established, in order to avoid groundless errors and to reveal the root of these errors, the other-powered, that is, the nature of the not truly established completely imputed, is explained, thereby revealing the faculties such as the eye. That is, if the alaya-consciousness is established, then it is established as the object of the alaya-consciousness. Thus, the five faculties such as the eye, which arise from the complete maturation of the unique seeds existing in the alaya-consciousness and appear in oneself and others' continuums, are established as faculties. If the alaya-consciousness is not established, then the eye consciousness and others can generate the ability to grasp their respective unique objects such as form and sound.

The immediately preceding condition of one's own arising, that is, the difference in the power of the previous consciousness, is what is termed the sense faculty of the eye, etc. As it is said in the Twenty Verses: "From whatever seed of its own, whatever appearance of consciousness arises, its birthplace, the Muni has said, is twofold." And also in the Examination of the Object: "Whatever is the nature of the power of simultaneous co-operation, that is also the sense faculty; this is not contradictory to consciousness." This is what was said. Secondly, explaining the form taken by the and: From form to touch, what are the aspects and what is the nature of those mentioned above? The four great elements are the cause, whatever is the object of the eye sense, etc., is shown in terms of two characteristics and two divisions. The characteristics of these should be understood as being shown by three causes, possessors of objects, and their own nature. Among these, "the four great elements are the cause" means that, as explained before, it eliminates the wrong ideas of one's own and other schools, such as thinking that there is no cause and that it arises from a cause that is not in harmony, and thus symbolizes the form of the result. "The object of the eye sense" means that among the five senses, it is only the object of the eye sense, and not the others, thus distinguishing it from other things such as sound. "Meaning" means showing one's own nature. Similarly, it should be applied to other things and explained. There are also aggregates that arise from one element, and similarly there are aggregates that arise from two elements, etc. Isn't this what was said before? So why is it said that the eye, etc., arise from the four great elements as a cause? It is true, but nevertheless, since it is not necessary for all aggregates to have all four elements, it is said that there are also those that arise from one element. And the forms of the eye, etc., as results, in all cases depend on any of the four elements, such as earth, and sometimes may arise from the four elements as a cause, so it is said that the four great elements are the cause. As it is said, whatever is form, whatever it may be, all of them are the four great elements and the four great elements.
